Internationally acclaimed JUNO Award winning jazz vocalist Sophie Milman is widely regarded as one of Canada s best jazz singers. Although she was barely into her 20s when she released her self titled 2004 debut album, it becamea major hit in Canada, establishing her as a rising star and an in demand live act.

Her 2007 sophomore album Make Someone Happy debuted at #1 on the Billboard. Canadian Jazz chart, peaked at #3 on Billboard s U.S. Jazz chart, and won a JUNO Award as Vocal Jazz Album of the Year.

Sophie Milman is a Russian-born jazz vocalist who currently lives in Canada. After emigrating from Russia in the early 1990s, Milman, who is of Jewish heritage, spent most of her childhood years in Israel where she listened extensively to jazz. Her self-titled debut album was released on October 12, 2004, in Canada via Linus Entertainment and in 2006 in the United States on Koch. Milman is a student of commerce at the University of Toronto. She won 2008 Juno Award for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year for Make Someone Happy.

Jazz vocalist Sophie Milman is a sophisticated and torchy singer with a bent toward American popular songbook standards. Born in Russia of Jewish heritage, Milman spent much of her childhood in Israel, where her parents moved after the fall of the Berlin Wall. In the early '90s, Milman's family emigrated once again to Toronto, Canada. Having sung from a young age, the then teenage Milman was already familiar with such iconic vocalists as Ella Fitzgerald, Mahalia Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and others. In 2004, a chance performance at "Real Divas" night -- a local Toronto jazz series -- brought Milman to the attention of producer Bill King, who then secured a few showcase performances for the burgeoning star. Produced by Grammy-winner Matt Pierson (Jane Monheit, Michael Franks, Joshua Redman, Kirk Whalum), this warm, witty, and altogether wonderful collection marks the first time Sophie has recorded in New York with an all-star supporting cast of jazz veterans and hot new stars: names like Randy Brecker, Chris Potter, Gerald Clayton, Julian Lage, Lewis Nash, and Kevin Hays.

It s also the first Sophie Milman collection that features arrangements for strings and larger ensembles. Widely regarded as one of Canada's best jazz singers, Russian-born, Toronto-based vocalist Sophie Milman changes tact slightly for her fourth studio album, In the Moonlight. The twinkling piano chords, shuffling, brushed stroke rhythms, and gentle brass instrumentation which defined her previous output are still very much in evidence, but having traveled to New York to record with producer Matt Pierson (Jane Monheit, Michael Franks), the Juno Award winner has capitalized on the opportunity to expand her sound by inviting a string ensemble on board for the first time in her career. However, avoiding the temptation to smother the timeless, smoky, jazz bar arrangements in layers of bombastic layers of strings, the pair only use their newly recruited musicians sparingly and when needed, with only the Duke Ellington standards "Prelude to a Kiss" and "Day Dream," and the Umbrellas of Cherbourg number "Watch What Happens" offering anything more than the occasional orchestral flourish.

It's an approach which entirely befits Milman's intimate and understated cabaret tones, whose seductive French-language delivery of Serge Gainsbourg's "Ces Petits Riens" and expressive, timeless performance of the Gershwin classic "Do It Again," belie her twenty-something years. The constant low-key, candlelight vibes inevitably begin to wear a little thin, but luckily, Milman occasionally shakes things up a little bit, whether it's the sensuous bossa nova reworking of the Billie Holiday favorite "Speak Low," the toe-tapping swing jazz rendition of Jon Hendricks' "No More Blues" or, in a rare concession to the modern music scene, the yearning and heartfelt torch song treatment of Feist's folk-pop album track "So Sorry." Indeed, it's the latter's convincing transition which makes you wish that Milman would tackle more contemporary material more often. Nevertheless, In the Moonlight is still a beautifully arranged selection of songs which, while nothing particularly revolutionary, unarguably provides one of the classiest Sunday morning soundtracks of the year. ---Jon O'Brien, Rovi

On "Take Love Easy" Sophie Milman takes another huge leap forward in a career that has been celebrated from Day One as one of the brightest stories in the vocal universe. This album reveals more nuances to Sophie's growing skills. In addition to a group of hand-picked standards delivered in her sassy and sultry style, Sophie stretches the boundaries of her repertoire by including more contenporary pop songs by the likes of Joni Mitchell (Be Cool), Paul Simon (50 Ways To Leave Your Lover), even Bruce Springsteen (I'm On Fire). But these tunes are hardly about "going pop". Sophie is all about moving the jazz vocal tradition forward in the most musically agreeable way possible. – editorial reviews

It's just a darn shame so many budget-conscious Hollywood movies save a few bucks by using snippets of a classic rock oldie instead of actually using vocalists to sing theme songs. If they did, the cool groove of Sophie Milman's vocals would be the perfect accompaniment for a montage of lovers walking in the rain, looking soulfully in each other's eyes over a table in a restaurant and "long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days."

A vocalist in the tradition of Ella Fitzgerald and Nat King Cole, Milman has one of those voices that has both range and power, but she knows how to caress a lyric and tap into the emotional depths of the song. Like many artists who can make singing the telephone book sound good, Milman is dependent upon both good material and complimentary production to get the most bang for the buck. She's blessed with both on Take Love Easy.

An example can be found in "Be Cool" as Milman creamy voice purrs and gently strokes fellow Canadian import Joni Mitchell's lyrics. Songs written and/or performed by Paul Simon, Bonnie Raitt, and Bruce Springsteen all come in for the Sophie Milman Treatment which means she croons, the band cooks, and the listener reaps the benefits.

Simon's light-hearted, but sardonic "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" was practically made for a jazzy interpretation that doesn't take itself too seriously, but it's Springsteen's "I'm On Fire" and Bonnie Raitt's hit, "I Can't Make You Love Me," that benefit most from Milman's take. They become soulful serenades as Steven MacKinnon's impeccable production exacts the best out of Milman's capabilities.

Milman also knows her way around expected songwriters such as Duke Ellington ("Take Love Easy"), Cole Porter ("Love For Sale" and "I Concentrate On You"), and Antonio Carlos Jobim ("Triste") are among the old standards that are lovingly rendered on Take Love Easy.

If Milman strutted around in her underwear and sang sugary pop music she'd be a superstar (though she'd probably have to change her name for being too ethnic). She won't have to do any of those things to get recognition if her designated audience supports Take Love Easy as enthusiastically as the fans of Britney, Fergie, or other one-name pop tarts. ---Jeff Winbusch, allaboutjazz.com
