With a trajectory only starting to expand beyond his native Poland, before succumbing to complications from cancer in 1979 at age 32, it's little surprise that Zbigniew Seifert has flown largely beneath the radar of even the most knowledgeable jazzer. Still, it appears as though overdue attention is finally returning to this remarkable violinist, whose Man of the Light (Promising Music, 1977) remains an overlooked gem of incendiary post-John Coltrane modality, and impressionistic, European classicism. A documentary film is underway, and the international attention commencing with Seifert's Oregon collaboration, Violin (Vanguard, 1977), and his own exceptional Passion (Capitol, 1979) (featuring John Scofield, Richie Beirach, Eddie Gomez, Jack DeJohnette and Nana Vasconcelos), seems on the cusp of an overdue breakthrough. Three decades late, perhaps, but, in the final analysis, never too late.

Nora joins other recent archival Polish releases like Kilimanjaro (Anex, 2007), but unlike that live double-disc set—the violinist's last documented appearance; a fusion-centric date with electric piano and guitar—this set collects Seifert's earliest live performances as leader of his first quartet where, despite violin being his first instrument, he plays nothing but alto saxophone (which he also played in trumpeter Tomasz Stanko's early free jazz ensembles) . The 55-minute set collects radio recordings from three shows, beginning with a March, 1969 show at Jazz nad Odrą, ending in October the following year at Warsaw's Jazz Jamboree.

Often compared to Coltrane—sounding how the saxophone giant might have sounded, had he picked up a bow rather than a reed—Nora provides inescapable evidence that Seifert, on saxophone, was deeply affected by Coltrane, but also Ornette Coleman, and Charles Lloyd. A dark-hued, rubato take of Miles Davis' "Blue in Green" positions the quartet early on, with pianist Jan Jarczyk finding a nexus between Bill Evans' lyricism and McCoy Tyner's greater power, albeit without the denser block chords. Jarczyk co-composed "Meandry" with Seifert; a free-wheeling piece redolent of Coltrane's more liberated final days, but demonstrating considerably more restraint, even as Seifert's solo escalates in intensity, with Jarczyk, bassist Jan Gonciarczyk and drummer Jaņusz Stefanski heading into the ozone. There may be seven years and a completely different instrument between this performance and Man of the Light, but the lineage is inescapable.

Elsewhere, Seifert's knotty title track leads to some of the set's most energetic and jagged interplay, swinging with reckless abandon and punctuated by Jarczyk's aggressive, Cecil Taylor-esque stance, while his Latin-esque "Reminiscenje" may be Nora's most centrist track, but remains imbued with passion and fire.

These relatively thin-sounding mono recordings are only adequate, but the performances more than compensate for any sonic shortcomings. Nora presents an alternate view of Zbigniew Seifert to a world familiar (if at all) with his more distinctive violin prowess. More than just an archival find, it bolsters increased interest in an artist whose musical life may have been over almost before it began, but who shone all the more brightly because of it. ---John Kelman, allaboutjazz.com

Po czterdziestu latach od rozwiązania grupy wreszcie można się przekonać, jaki potencjał tkwił w grupie Seiferta. „Nora” to ich pierwsze, autorskie wydawnictwo.

„Nora” to trzy unikatowe, kompletne zapisy występów Kwartetu na festiwalach Jazz nad Odrą i Jazz Jamboree w latach 1969-70. Można prześledzić ewolucję zespołu: od standardów po autorskie, intrygujące kompozycje, wzbogacone porywającymi improwizacjami. Cd release of 1978 concert album (first part) originally released by Poljazz (PSJ101). Zbigniew Seifert (6 June 1946–15 February 1979) was a Polish jazz violinist. Seifert was born in Kraków, Poland in 1946. He played alto saxophone early in his career and was strongly influenced by John Coltrane. He devoted himself to jazz violin when he started performing with the Tomasz Stańko Quintet in 1970 and became one of the leading modern jazz violinists before he died of cancer at the age of 32.

Zbigniew Seifert (ur. 6 czerwca 1946 w Krakowie, zm. 15 lutego 1979) - polski skrzypek jazzowy, absolwent klasy skrzypiec Państwowej Wyższej Szkoły Muzycznej w Krakowie. Początkowo grał również na saksofonie altowym. W czasie studiów założył własny kwartet oraz rozpoczął współpracę z Tomaszem Stańko. Współpraca ta zbliżyła go do bardziej swobodnych form jazzowej improwizacji. W połowie lat 70. współpracował z wieloma muzykami europejskimi i amerykańskimi, nagrywając płyty m.in. z Joachimem Kühnem, Charliem Mariano, zespołem Oregon. W 1976 rozpoczął również nagrywanie płyt sygnowanych własnym nazwiskiem w maju "Solo violin" i we wrześniu "Man of the Light". W następnym roku ukazała się pierwsza amerykańska płyta "Zbigniew Seifert" (Capitol Records). Pierwsze polskie płyty Zbigniewa Seiferta "Kilimanjaro" i "Kilimanjaro 2" wydało Polskie Stowarzyszenie Jazzowe - była to rejestracja koncertu, który odbył się 14 listopada 1978 w krakowskim klubie "Pod Jaszczurami". Jego ekspresyjny styl, oparty na doskonałej technice wiolinistycznej, był rozwinięciem idei muzycznych Johna Coltrane'a. Do największych osiągnięć należy nagrana 3 miesiące przed śmiercią artysty płyta "Passion" w której nagraniu udział wzięli również perkusista Jack DeJohnette, gitarzysta John Scofield, kontrabasista Eddie Gomez, pianista Richie Beirach oraz perkusista Nana Vasconcelos.

He moved to Germany in 1973, was with Hans Koller's Free Sound from 1974-75 and freelanced (including with Joachim Kuhn). Seifert played at the Monterey Jazz Festival with John Lewis in 1976 and the following year recorded with Oregon. As a leader Seifert (who was affectionately known as Zbiggy) performed music that ranged from free jazz to fusion. Seifert recorded for Muza in 1969, Mood from 1974-76, MPS in 1976 and Capitol from 1977-78. He died of cancer at the age of 32.

Album muzyczny polskiego skrzypka i saksofonisty altowego Zbigniewa Seiferta. LP nagrany w Tonstudio Zuckerfabrik, w Stuttgarcie,w Niemczech 27-30 września 1976, wydany przez niemiecką wytwórnię MPS w 1976. Seifertowi towarzyszyli: niemiecki pianista Joachim Kühn i znakomita amerykańska sekcja rytmiczna w osobach Cecila McBee (kontrabas) i Billy'ego Harta (perkusja). Obaj ci muzycy grali z pianistą McCoy'em Tynerem, który dla Seiferta był właśnie "Man Of The Light" i to jemu dedykował ten utwór. W utworze "Love In The Garden" (zagranym w duecie z Seifertem) wystąpił gościnnie holenderski pianista Jasper van 't Hof. Innym duetem na tej płycie było "Stillness", grane przez Seiferta (skrzypce) i Cecila McBee (kontrabas). Producentem nagrań był znany niemiecki dziennikarz muzyczny i pisarz Joachim-Ernst Berendt.

Jeden z najwybitniejszych muzyków jazzowych w Polsce. Przedwczesna śmierć przerwała świetnie zapowiadającą się karierę. Saksofonista i skrzypek jazzowy, kompozytor i aranżer, lider zespołów jazzowych.

Mimo znaczących sukcesów oraz dobrej pozycji na europejskim rynku jazzowym, dopiero w 1976 zdecydował się na nagranie pierwszego, autorskiego album „Man Of The Light”. Dopracowany i niezwykle nowatorski projekt przyniósł mu uznanie krytyki i publiczności na całym świecie. Efektem tego było zaproszenie na koncerty i nagrania do USA. Muzyka Seiferta zainteresowała wybitnych twórców jazzu: w 1976 wystąpił na Monterey Jazz Festival w Kalifornii m.in. z legendarnym pianistą grupy Modern Jazz Quartet - Johnem Lewisem; w Nowym Jorku nawiązał współpracę z kultową grupą nowoczesnego jazzu, kwartetem Oregon. Przez cały czas pracował z przekonaniem, że do swoich projektów może pozyskać najwybitniejsze jazzowe indywidualności: w 1978 zaprosił więc do współpracy grupę wybitnych muzyków amerykańskich, m.in. Johna Scofielda, Eddiego Gomeza i Jacka De Johnette, by wspólnie zrealizować „Passion” - jeden z najwybitniejszych albumów zrealizowanych przez polskiego jazzmana. Był jednym z niewielu muzyków, którzy budowali pomost pomiędzy muzyką klasyczną, a swobodną realizacją jazzową.

Ekspresyjna, intensywna i technicznie bez zarzutu gra znakomicie odpowiadała formule wolnego stylu, jaki w jazzie preferował. Takie pojmowanie jazzu w pełni realizowało jego pragnienie, by "grać tak, jak Coltrane, gdyby ten grał na skrzypcach". --- muzyka.onet.pl
