Composer-performer Daniel Wohl's album État will be released May 31, 2019, on New Amsterdam and Nonesuch Records. The album features electro-acoustic pieces written by Wohl, and includes guest performances by Poliça's Channy Leaneagh with co-production by Son Lux's Ryan Lott and mmph. État, recorded with members of yMusic and the Calder Quartet, is the third release in a new partnership between the two record labels, established with the goal of enabling contemporary American composers to realize creative ambitions that might not otherwise be achievable.

Born and raised in Paris and currently residing in Los Angeles, Daniel Wohl is consistently celebrated for his distinctive blend of electronics with acoustic instrumentation to "surprising and provocative effect" (NPR). On État, Wohl pushes this combination to a new level, exploring the new dimensions that masterful production can provide. "While being fascinated with classically notated acoustic composition I also became interested in all the music production tools currently available and was drawn towards combining both methods," Wohl explains. "I wanted to get as deep as I could into the production of sound."

État, which in French means "state," references an evocative image, both ancient and futuristic, that Wohl kept imagining as he created the music—an artifact from the past that holds a message, buried deep in the earth and slowly becoming exposed, until it is discoverable. "I find the notion pretty fascinating," Wohl says, "that something is always there—knowledge, experience, an idea—you just need to be in the right state, or have the right lens, to be able to perceive it."

Wohl, praised as one of his generation's "imaginative, skillful creators" (New York Times), has produced albums and written orchestral and chamber works, as well as film, television, and ballet scores. He has collaborated on projects with Jóhann Jóhannsson, David Lang, Morgan Neville, Julia Holter, Son lux and Laurel Halo, and his music has been programmed by esteemed ensembles including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony (SoundBox), the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (MusicNOW), the Bang on a Can All-Stars, eighth blackbird, Sō Percussion, the Calder Quartet, and the Mivos Quartet. Recent performances of his music have been held at Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall, the Barbican, the Broad Museum, MASS MoCA, Sadler's Wells, the Holland Festival and MoMA PS1. ---nonesuch.com

Holographic is the sophomore album and series of performances from Paris-born composer Daniel Wohl. The album was co-produced with Paul Corley (Oneohtrix Point Never, Tim Hecker, Ben Frost) and features contributions from Lucky Dragons, Olga Bell, Caroline Shaw (Roomful of Teeth), Bang on Can All-Stars, Mantra Percussion, Mivos Quartet and Iktus Percussion. In a groundbreaking new model, Holographic was commissioned by pioneering organizations Liquid Music (of The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra), MASS MoCA, Baryshnikov Arts Center and Indianapolis Museum of Art. ---newamrecords.com

Daniel Wohl is a gifted alchemist in sound. His new album, Holographic, seems like the product of some wild-eyed professor mixing up aural compounds in a laboratory. The vast catalog of sounds Wohl has crafted mesmerizes. In Holographic he has created an arresting space where electronics and acoustic instruments commingle with cinematic vibrancy.

Wohl doesn't work alone. The Paris-born, Los Angeles-based composer has drafted two percussion groups — Mantra and Iktus — plus the Mivos Quartet, Bang on a Can All Stars and singers Olga Bell, from Dirty Projectors, and Pulitzer Prize winner Caroline Shaw, from Roomful of Teeth.

Even with all of these acoustic musicians, it's difficult to tell which sounds they produced and which emanate from Wohl's bank of electronics. And perhaps that's the point. The voices on "Source" hover in layers of misty vocalise, but Wohl also clips and samples them. And don't expect a traditional string quartet sound on "Formless." The members of Mivos slither in long, barely recognizable string lines amid a thicket of muted yet monolithic pulsations and prickly percussive effects. The music is both aggressive and gorgeous.

Multi-layered pieces like "Replicate (Part 2)" deliver dense tapestries of sound, yet no single thread appears gratuitous. Pulsing mechanical clinks, metallic tinkling and breaking glass from Iktus slowly bloom above eerie whirs, low foghorn-like blasts and something akin to the swooshes of passing trains. After a brief respite, cymbals clash over a daunting electronic drone that dissolves into a bright bouquet of interlocking vibraphones, vague train whistles and a melancholy three-note descending figure.

The album's closing track, "Shapes," might be its most traditional. Wohl shares writing credit with LA experimental music outfit Lucky Dragons, and here the texture is more transparent, closer to standard chamber music. In undulating waves of Mivos Quartet strings and Wohl's glistening electronics, the music seems to look backward toward the Renaissance, conjuring the spirit of one of John Dowland's disconsolate pavans.

Like Wohl's fine debut album, Corps Exquis, Holographic quietly erases the line between electronic and acoustic music, while potentially appealing to many curious ears, from fans of Aphex Twin to followers of new chamber music. The question now is: What sounds will Wohl craft next? ---Daniel Wohl, npr.org
