William Christie – conductor

"William Christie's reading of Mozart's great unfinished Mass, sharply etched and urgently paced, is in many ways compelling. At just over 49 minutes - not exactly bountiful measure for a full-price CD - it is by my reckoning the swiftest version on disc, with virtually every movement slightly or appreciably faster than on the rival period performances listed above. Throughout, Christie shows a characteristically keen feeling for gesture, and for the dance rhythms that underlie much of the score: and movements like the 'Quoniam' Trio, the Credo and the 'Benedictus' quartet are uncommonly lithe and graceful. With the soloists finely matched in timbre and phrasing, the ensembles have a chamber-musical refinement and delicacy, while the chorus, if a shade less incisive than their English equivalents, sing with rounded, well-knit tone and impressive agility." --- Richard Wigmore, Gramophone
