Conversation is likely to stop if you put on the CD reissue of "O Holy Night" featuring Luciano Pavarotti with the National Philharmonic Orchestra under Kurt Herbert Adler with the Wandsworth Boys' Choir and the London Voices... Most of the music, an indiscriminating patchwork of Catholic religiosity from Schubert through Franck to Bach/Gounod, has been re-arranged, but Yon's Gesu bambino and the Sanctus from the Berlioz Requiem are left with their original orchestration. Adeste fideles at the end is dominated by that breathtaking swooping voice. –---Gramophone [12/1985]

Luciano Pavarotti gets some help from an impressive list of friends -- including Kurt Herbert Adler, Wandsworth Boys Choir, and Russell Burgess -- on this dramatic and somewhat grandiose Christmas compilation. Songs like "Adeste Fideles," "Gesu Bambino," "Agnus Dei," "Ave Maria," "Panis Angelicus," and the title track make this a noteworthy Christmas album. ---Gina Boldman, AllMusic Review

Live concert of chestnuts with Pavarotti and Nuccia Focile. I prefer the Pavarotti from the 1970's with his sweeter voice, but he's OK here.

Nuccia Focile gave a simply knockout solo recital in 2006 that I was so fortunate to attend. The best recital I've ever attended. She brought tears to my eyes. Unfortunately, her in person commitment to the music doesn't travel that well here. She's decent on the recording, but other singers do it better. ---Roy Gordon, amazon.com

Luciano Pavarotti has long avoided doing the kind of solo crossover release often proffered by his Three Tenors comrades Plácido Domingo and José Carreras; indeed, in his liner introduction he claims that he was initially "very skeptical" of this project. He came around, though, and the result marks his first solo album of any kind in years. Catty opera cognoscenti hoping for an embarrassment may be gratified by a few booklet photos (keep that shirt on, Luciano!), but otherwise they're out of luck. The music is actual modern Italian pop rather than the sort of international sentimental style that seems to have been dreamed up in a marketing department, not a music studio. The songs included are mostly originals (several by producer Michele Centonze), and though they vary in quality they don't rely on the kind of flabby familiarity that can doom a crossover project artistically. (An adaptation of Nino Rota's old Love Theme From Romeo and Juliet will please Three Tenors fans.) The style is vocally oriented and suits Pavarotti well; electronic accompaniments are quiet and rarely compete with his voice. The singer even has fun with the quasi-rock & roll title track and with a portrait of the aging Caruso, featuring Jeff Beck on guitar. His age is clearly audible, but he's still got it. Some have suggested that Ti adoro represents an attempt on the part of Pavarotti's label Decca to compete with the current crop of teen-classical crossover divas. If so, the attempt is misconceived and proves little -- except that he could teach them a thing or three. On its own terms, however, it works just fine. You might even wish he'd done it ten years ago, but even so you won't find another 68-year-old who can sing with this kind of verve. ---James Manheim, Rovi

‘Mamma' is the result of a collaboration between Luciano Pavarotti and Henry Mancini. Some of the most popular Italian songs such as 'In un palco della Scala', 'Vivere' and 'La Ghirlandeina' are sung by Pavarotti with love and treated to typical lush Mancini orchestrations. The whole thing is a joy to listen to especially my favourite: a version of 'Two lovely black eyes' (yes, honestly!) influenced by Pavarotti's attendance at an Eisteddfod early in his career. I love it! --- m.elaine, amazon.com

That explains why this putative survey of Pavarotti's career breaks off in the mid-'90s, prior to such blockbusters as the Paris 1998 concert and most of the various Pavarotti & Friends releases. And it also explains the dominance of popular or semi-popular material: Pavarotti, when this disc appeared, was at the height of his renown and was making moves in the direction of crossover stardom. One of the two discs is devoted to crossover material, mostly Neapolitan song but also including a duet on "My Way" with Frank Sinatra. From a perspective overlooking the great tenor's entire career, this somewhat overstates the importance of popular song in his output. He enthusiastically recorded it, and well, but he never focused on it the way even the other Two Tenors did. In general, though, the time frame of this album serves the listener well. The weaker final stage of Pavarotti's career is omitted, and the operatic selections included on disc one, going back as far as 1968, offer a good overview of the evolution of Pavarotti's voice and show his talents in works beyond the Italian standards: hear his irresistible "La fleur que tu m'avais jetée," from Bizet's Carmen (CD 1, track 15). The lack of any notes at all, even a capsule biography, is a disadvantage in the packaging, and one could easily have been provided: the tracklist insert unfolds to a large image of the cover logo that isn't big enough to be a poster and isn't really suited to be anything else. For a couple of hours of Pavarotti for the commute, however, this double disc, also available as an .mp3 download, will fill the bill. ---James Manheim

Few operatic tenors of the 20th century were more honored than Luciano Pavarotti, and none were as popular; his fame went far beyond the usual boundaries of classical music and his music was as widely embraced as any pop star. The Best is a two-disc collection released in 2005 that features 35 classic arias from Pavarotti's recordings for the Decca and London labels, including selections by Verdi, Puccini, Donizetti, Leoncavallo, Tosti, and Centonze. ---Mark Deming, Rovi

Henry Mancini – conductor

I've loved Domenico Modugno's original, light and jazzy version for years. I love the romantic words, flying, then dancing in the infinite sky and dancing then returning to your blue eyes.

When I heard Luciano Pavarotti's version, conducted by Henry Mancini, it almost about had me flying in the sky with him. As the greatest tenor, Pavarotti's version is powerful and dramatic and emotionally charged. The lyrics are different, "sweet music played only for me", "I think a dream like this will never return to me again". He doesn't sing the "returning to your eyes blue as the sky". It's still a treasure. I feel strong energy whenever I listen to this version. When he sings "penso che un sogno cosi non ritorni mai piu", it's a sad prediction sung as only he could. I join the skeptics when remembering Luciano Pavarotti singing with Bono and Michael Jackson, He wasn't trained for pop or rock.

This is a very simple, yet extremely alluring Italian song, very popular way back in the 50's in Italy, The States and more. Perhaps this is the reason Pavarotti can add new dimension, breath and passion to this romantic classic. Sung entirely in Italian, I recommend this to admirers of Luciano Pavarotti. --- Groovin' guy, amazon.com
