One of the great benefits of Handel's relatively long life was the many different styles with which he experimented. We are well aware of the tremendous output of his English period which included works such as Messiah (MHS #5271423), Samson (MHS #5346665) and Belshazzar (MHS #5384463). But much earlier in his career Handel had spent some time in Rome where he honed what is known as his Italian style and that included the masterpiece Julius Caesar (MHS #5273449). This new release introduces Handel as a composer of traditionally religious music that used Latin texts.
While in Rome in 1707 Handel was asked to compose music for the festival of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. This new release, Carmelite Vespers, is the result of that request and here we experience the great choral composer in Latin, not in the English text we are accustomed to hearing. However, the music is no less thrilling; in fact in many ways it is more youthful and exuberant.
This performance, which tries to reconstruct exactly how the service may have sounded, features the amazing choral work and playing of the Taverner Choir and Players led by Andrew Parrott. There is also some amazing solo vocal work by a septet of fine singers including the versatile Emma Kirkby. This is revelatory Handel in a superb recording. ---Jacob Anthony, classicalstore.com
