If, like me, you are seeking an introduction to the more well-known classics, then this should definitely fit the bill. The music is divided into individual categories: Relaxing, TV & Cinema, Romantic, Spiritual, Favourites, Spectacular. Though this is useful at times, I much prefer to listen to a random selection playing on my MP3 player. It has enabled me to identify pieces of music that I liked but was not able to name. It has also introduced me to pieces that I had not heard before and have come to enjoy. Since buying I do feel drawn to seek out quite a number of the complete works, which is exactly the inspiration I was hoping for. Not having purchased similar albums I am not able to compare but this does provide exactly what it claims to - and includes many beautiful pieces. It is excellent value for money, contains so many tracks and a lot of variety. I do not feel a need to purchase other similar combinations, which may have been the case if this had not proved as good. ---Deanne, amazon.com

Jan Engel, ur. ? – zm. 30 czerwca 1788 w Warszawie – polski kompozytor i kapelmistrz okresu klasycyzmu, drukarz muzyczny.

The English Concert
Trevor Pinnock - director

Archiv Produktion released A Grand Concert of Musick in 1985, and the performances by Trevor Pinnock and the English Concert are a high point in the label's catalog. This album of concertos by John Stanley, Thomas Arne, Francesco Geminiani, Pieter Hellendaal, and Charles Avison, along with a symphony by William Boyce, provides a quick survey of some of the music that was popular in England in the late Baroque era. Performing on original instruments and led from the harpsichord by Pinnock, the ensemble plays with crisp articulation, vigorous bowing, and bright tone colors, and the strings are surrounded by a wonderful aural halo produced by resonant acoustics. Pinnock and the English Baroque Concert took pride not only in playing in authentic period style, but also in providing the historical context behind the music, so this program represents musical activity centered in London circa 1730, when the English national style was developing in the wake of Purcell and contemporaneously with Handel. --- Blair Sanderson, Rovi

Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles – Choir (Chorus)

The first of its kind, charged with joy, and graced with angelic blend of voices, this new release captures in song the spirit of hope and expectation of Advent.

This unique CD is recorded by the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles: a young, monastic order of Sisters located in rural Missouri, dedicated to prayer for priests. Advent at Ephesus includes an amazing variety of traditional Latin and English hymns, polyphony, Gregorian Chant, medieval harmonies and an original piece to prayerfully lead you through the sacred season in preparation for Christmas.

Advent is perhaps the most neglected season, but remains one of the most treasured by the sisters here at the Priory of Our Lady of Ephesus. The Liturgical year has reached its dramatic close with the Feast of Christ the King and a series of meditations on the Last Judgment. While lamps remain lit in our hearts for the final coming of the Lord, (track 14) a milder tenor creeps into the voice of the Church as Advent begins a new year, and attention is also given to the coming of the Infant Christ into the world (tracks 1, 6, and 13.) The Annunciation (tracks 3, 5 and 8) the cry of the Baptist (track 12) and the expectation of Our Lady (tracks 11, 16, and 17) are all leitmotifs that repeatedly occur in the chants and the Divine Office. The nightly antiphon to Our Lady changes from the familiar Salve Regina to the gentle Alma Redemptoris Mater, honoring her motherhood (tracks 2, 15.) A bold, melancholy tone of impatience is joined to those of the prophets and chosen people who waited for the Lords coming for centuries (tracks 7, 9.) Yet there also remains a sustained strain of gaudium, the interior joy characteristic of Advent that lends its name to the Third Sunday, Gaudete Sunday. (Track 10, Offertory of Gaudete Sunday.)

The Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles is a monastic community located in rural Missouri. Consecrated to the Queen of Apostles, their lives are dedicated to contemplative prayer especially for priests. They support themselves primarily by making priestly vestments. Professing obedience to the Churchs teaching, the community upholds a loving commitment to preserving the liturgical heritage of the Church in the Extraordinary Form of the Mass and traditional monastic Office. This is their first recording with de Montfort Music and Decca records. ---Editorial Reviews, amazon.com

The nuns of the Priory of Our Lady of Ephesus -- the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles -- based in Missouri, sing the divine office eight times a day. It was only natural that they should record some of their work for close friends and benefactors, which they have done a few times since 2008. In 2012, a recording for the wider public was made, entitled Advent at Ephesus. It contains a mixture of Gregorian chants and hymns used during the season immediately preceding Christmas, as well as a few carols in English. The blending of the female voices gives a different, yet just as pleasing, perspective to this music, which is more often heard performed by male voices. ---Patsy Morita, Rovi
