In the past (especially the end of the 70’s and beginning of the 80’s) there wasn’t hard to see a musician gathering a set of famous invited guests to play on an album with them. Today, it’s not so usual to see such a thing, but from time to time, one of these albums appears. And “The Situation”, the latest album of SNOWY WHITE AND THE WHITE FLAMES is one of them.

To explain a bit, Snowy White is a British guitarist who played on THIN LIZZY from 1980 to 1982, and his name is linked to bands as PINK FLOYD, ROGER WATERS & THE BLEEDING HEART BAND, and actually plays on the band of Roger Waters. And what could the listeners expect of his album? Well, it’s an eclectic Classic Rock album, because it bears elements from Folk Rock, Blues, Jazz Rock, and even some touches of Latin musical genres. Although such musical format was used many times in the past, in his hands the things flow in a lovely and great way, indeed, with songs of excellent taste.

The sound quality of “The Situation” is excellent, being clean and worried to make everything sound with the right instrumental tunes (the percussive touches on “L. A. Skip” is extremely clear). Yes, it’s a great work with excellent results. The album doesn’t sound aggressive, and it won’t remind of something that he did in his past bands, because it’s not Snowy’s musical focus. But on songs “The Situation” with its Blues/Noir ambiance and excellent chorus, the eclectic feeling of “L. A. Skip” (the Reggae elements can be heard on the percussion and clean guitars), the introspective Jazz/Blues essence of “Can’t Seem To Do Much About It”, the sad Blues introspection of “Crazy Situation Blues”, the party Blues Rock with very good bass guitar and drums presence of “You Can’t Take It With You”, and the classical Blues presented on “Hard Blues” are the best songs of the album.

To hear “The Situation” is a very good experience for anyone. ---"Metal Mark" Garcia, metal-temple.com

The name Snowy White may be familiar to some, even those with just a little musical knowledge will probably remember he was famed for having a UK Top Ten hit, ‘Bird Of Paradise’ back in the early 1980’s. To most rockers he will be better known for his stint at guitarist in Thin Lizzy where he featured and co-wrote on both the Chinatown and Renegade albums. True fans will also be aware that he was Pink Floyd’s backing guitarist during their European and U.S tours back in 1977, then again on The Wall tour in 1980. Not to mention his friendship and musical collaborations with the likes of Peter Green and Jim Capaldi amongst many others. But most importantly he is a highly respected solo artist who has always remained true to his own homemade, organic musical style, which is first and foremost blues orientated.

This new album The Situation is no exception, and after several albums with The White Flames, this is the follow-up to his 2017 offering “Reunited”. Speaking of The Situation, Snowy says “These songs are my expression of where I was in 2018… Up and down, good and bad, weak and strong, it’s all here… Just doing my thing as usual, enjoying playing with all my musician friends”. These highs and lows are poignantly captured in this wonderful collection of ambient, atmospheric songs. Setting the framework, the first track, also dubbed ‘The Situation‘, is a funk laden, bass heavy opener interspersed with Spanish guitar and a heavy hook. The gentle meandering of ‘This Feeling‘ has the genius ability to make you consider your very own emotions at this exact point in time.

The beat steps up a notch for ‘LA Skip‘ and you’re transported to Venice Beach at sunset with a pina colada or three, soaking up the vibe while enjoying the eclectic entertainment. A nonchalant mood ensues with ‘Can’t Seem To Do Much About It‘, in which I feel Roger Waters’ influence can be distinctly heard – the lyrics state “no birds in the sky, no fish in the sea, seems like that’s really how it’s gonna be” – a frustrating realisation that something needs to be done to change the way we treat the planet but feeling helpless in being able to do so. We then experience a drop in emotion as ‘Crazy Situation Blues‘ kicks in, reminding me that this guy has evidently collaborated with Gary Moore on occasion. From whatever heartache Snowy was experiencing in the previous track, still in keeping with a chunky blues section, ‘The Blues In My Reflection‘ brings a more positive outlook, with a glimmer of hope that love still exists in its many different forms.

The darkest part of the album then comes with ‘Why Do I Still Have The Blues?‘ which has some sublime guitar work, a deeply emotive moment to which you can only go upwards from and true to word, ‘You Can’t Take It With You‘ is an upbeat jolly jaunt of carefree blues about making the most of what you do have. The instrumental ‘Migration‘ is my favourite piece on the album, somewhat Santana-esque, taking you on a journey through smooth jazz grooves and South American beats that you can easily become totally immersed in. A complete change in tempo then comes with ‘The Lying Game‘, with an intoxicatingly mellow riff and exceptional guitar solo, the spirits are lifted sky high again. Coming back to what Snowy does best with the self explanatory track Hard Blues, the album then seems to come full circle, completing with ‘I Can’t Imagine‘, a song that leaves both you and Snowy questioning what comes next, both musically and in life’s complex situations. This album is perfectly constructed for a philosophical cruise through the many moods of blues. ---Caroline Blood, myglobalmind.com

The album runs from the bluesier end to rock and even a tight Latin workout. Whatever the tempo and the groove, Snowy’s distinctive, soulful guitar runs like a golden thread throughout the album, connecting all together and making for a satisfyingand very listenable offering. n Snowy’s own words: “When I play music with friends that I respect and admire, both as players and as people, either doing live shows or in a recording environment, I feel that I’m exactly where I want to be. I feel at home. It’s been a year or two since I last got together with the musicians who appear on this new album, called, for obvious reasons, ‘Reunited’. We had a great time working together again and I’m very happy with the way they interpreted my ideas, helping me evolve the songs from the simple outlines that I took into the studio into complete pieces of music. So I would like to thank my friends Kuma, Max, Walter, Juan and Richard for adding their good vibes to the sessions. I feel very honoured that my music was transformed and improved by these fine musicians, and I consider myself very lucky to have had the opportunity to work with them once again. Because of them, recording ‘Reunited’ was a lot of fun and has created yet another store of good memories, and, for me, that’s what it’s all about. Music and musicians evolve and change over time, so this album is just snapshot of how it was at that moment in Snowy’s career. Tracks like ‘Have I Got Blues For You’, ‘Headful Of Blues’ and ‘Emptyhanded’ cover the bluesier side of things, whereas ‘Where Will You Belong’ and ‘In California’ are more reflective. ‘Nuff Said’ and ‘I Know Our Time Ain’t Long’ are examples of the more up-tempo and rockier Snowy White. There’s something for everybody, from the weird ‘Long Time No C’ to the tight latin groove of ‘Heard It All Before’. Whatever the tempo and the groove, Snowy’s distinctive soulful guitar runs like a golden thread throughout the album. ---bluesmagazine.nl

Snowy said:

"I’d had enough of being a singles artiste, and decided to just play some blues guitar for a while, so I asked Jeff and Graham to join up with myself and Kuma Harada, and I formed «The Blues Agency».”

So, Snowy White formed the touring blues band in 1986 with his old friend Kuma Harada, drummer Jeff Allen, and vocalist/guitarist Graham Bell. For three years the band toured in the UK and Europe and recorded. They released two albums: 1988 «Change My Life » and 1989 «Open for Business» [rereleased under the title «Blues On Me» in certain Countries].

Snowy really enjoyed getting back to his roots and playing twelve bar shuffles again.

Snowy said:

"It was nice just to play guitar again for a while and play all my old favorites, but after a couple of years I felt that I needed to stretch out musically again".

So, Snowy White's Blues Agency split in 1990 and all the members, except Graham Bell, went to play with Mick Taylor's All Star Blues Band. --- snowywhitefanclub.com

2009 release from British guitarist Snowy White and his new Blues Project. Snowy first became interested in music at the age of 11 when he was inspired by Blues musicians Buddy Guy and B.B. King. He then made a reputation for himself playing numerous sessions for a wide variety of musicians, most famously as second guitarist with Pink Floyd augmenting the bands sound on the tours. More recently he has been an integral part of Roger Waters live band. In October 2008, Snowy formed The Snowy White Blues Project and the band recorded this debut album. ---cduniverse

CD is very representative of the live performance in terms of its content, and is tidied up a bit by the clever electronics of a studio recording. Its great to see that the Blues Tradition is live and well with old standards mixed with new compositions. Snowy has done a superlative job as the old master getting the best out of his 'pupils', often allowing them to be centre stage, while he takes an unassuming back seat, filling in almost imperceptably, but with panache and the skill of the talented experienced elder statesman, using his 40 yr old Gibson as if it was made to exude liquid strands of gold. A must for anyone interested in the evolving facets of the Blues genre. --- Ian Watson, amazon.com

Brytyjski gitarzysta Snowy White (właśc. Terence Charles White) po raz pierwszy zainteresował się muzyką w wieku lat 11, słuchając nagrań bluesmanów Buddy Guya i B.B. Kinga. Swoje muzyczne umiejętności szlifował potem w wielu zespołach bluesowych, jednak w latach 70. zasłynął jako muzyk sesyjny, współpracując m. in. z Alem Stewartem, Cliffem Richardem i Peterem Greenem. Postanowił założyć swój własny zespół, w którym towarzyszyli mu Richard Bailey (perkusja) i Kuma Harada (bas). Właśnie z nimi nagrał swój debiutancki album "White Flames". Ku wielkiemu zaskoczeniu wszystkich pochodzący z płyty singel "Bird Of Paradise" na początku 1983 r. dotarł do Top 10 brytyjskiej listy przebojów.

Snowy White is a member of a unique and select handful of British Blues musicians who's sound and soul echoed the original Chicago and Delta blues masters. Peter Green, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, John Mayhall are a few of his peers. Snowy and his contemporaries added the ongoing rock sound to the Master's Blues sound: Otis Rush, Buddy Guy, B.B. King, and Freddie King. In 1974Snowy toured the US East Coast getting as far as New Orleans. He fell more deeply in love with the original blues sound of the South. He returned to London and did session work making a professional name for himself. During this time Snowy became close friends with Peter Green. In 1976 Snowy was asked to become the first augmenting musician to the Pink Floyd line-up. In 1979 Peter Green invited Snowy into the studio to work on INTO THE SKIES. As the story goes: Peter soon became tiered of the "record release and touring rat race" and began to sell off all his albums and equipment. He offered his 1959 Les Paul to Snowy for 100 pounds. Snowy refused telling Peter, "Put it away for awhile, you might want it later." As we know, Peter didn't hold on to the legendary '59 - he sold it to Gary Moore. Gary held the guitar until 2008 when he sold it.

The big, brassy band that backs Solomon Burke on this live set enhances, but never overshadows, his powerful vocals and God-given charisma. Opening with "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love," he gets the crowd in a festive mood before slinking into a strong three-song medley comprising "If You Need Me"/"Tonight's the Night"/"I Almost Lost My Mind." He displays his preaching skills on "Cruel World," and you can almost see the collection plate being passed. "Candy/Candy Rap" begins with a big band arrangement, the sound is bold and brassy, but then lightens with Burke's "Candy Rap." He excels on "Got to Get You Off My Mind," another one of his hits from back-in-the-day. In fact, the only glaring omission from his King Solomon era is the bewitching "Somebody's Watching You." On the three or so blues tunes he does, if you close your eyes, you'll think it was a female singing, as he sings in a higher key on blues tunes. Burke, a true character, closes this enjoyable performance with Roy Brown's classic "Good Rockin' Tonight." ---Andrew Hamilton, Rovi
