Rick Derringer tried a variety of different things in the 1980s, '90s, and 2000s. The singer/guitarist recorded his share of middle of the road pop/rock and adult contemporary albums, and he even recorded an instrumental jazz-pop/smooth jazz album that had George Benson-ish leanings (2002's Free Ride). But Derringer, who turned 61 in 2008, has a way of going back to blues-rock and hard rock -- which is exactly what he does on Knighted by the Blues. Granted, this 2009 release wasn't recorded with blues purists in mind; not everything on Knighted by the Blues adheres to the traditional 12-bar format. But the feeling of the blues is quite strong throughout this 51-minute CD; that feeling is as strong on Derringer's own songs as it is on enjoyable performances of Jimi Hendrix's "If 6 Was Nine" and Ray Charles' "Funny, I Still Love You." Knighted by the Blues is definitely one of Derringer's grittier, tougher, more ballsy efforts -- and given his history, it isn't surprising that he would return to this type of approach. Over the years, Derringer has fluctuated between very commercial recordings and recordings that were much edgier. It's no coincidence that even though Derringer is best known for "Rock & Roll Hoochie Koo," he is also well known for the bubblegum pop/rock he played with the McCoys in the '60s. So taking his history into account, it really isn't surprising that Derringer would offer a jazz-pop/smooth jazz album in 2002 and come out with a blues-rock/hard rock album like Knighted by the Blues seven years later in 2009. Knighted by the Blues isn't among Derringer's essential releases, but it's certainly respectable and is well worth hearing if one fancies his edgier side. ---Alex Henderson, Rovi

Rick Derringer plays the blues!!!! There is not one bad track on this album. I have played many of these songs at various venues and the response is always positive. Rick rocks the blues with a vengance and a style akin to Stevie Ray Vaughan. I am constantly asked where i dug up 'that unknown stevie ray song'. When i tell them who it is, they make it a point to actually write down the name of the ablum so they can purchase it and want to hear more. What better praise for an album than to have people wanting to hear it and buy it!!!! If you haven't got this album in your blues(blues/rock) collection, it ain't complete . . . If you have heard it and don't have it yet, "all you want to do is cry". ---amazon.com

This has got to be one of Rick Derringer's most under rated albums of all time! I don't really consider this a hardcore blues album, more of a Rock CD tinged with blues.

Blue Suede Blues will have you rocking out like never before,Blues All Night Long is a looong song with guitar playing to keep you wantin more.Meantown Blues is perfect in every aspect, vocals, playing etc. Sink Or Swim is another winner as is Time To Go. You can't go wrong with this. Two guitars up!!!! ---Bil lSmith, amazon.com

SMOKIN'! Jackhammer Blues is the best in Rick Derringer's evolving mastery of the genre of blues guitar. They just keep getting better and better. Derringer's voice may be naturally better suited to rock & pop than the blues, but he belts it with soul and lets his guitar do the rest of the talking. If you can handle mean, fluid, scuttling, slicing, vicious blues guitar from an absolute virtuoso, then this CD is a must-have. From boiling hot slippery licks to shimmering cascades of impossible arpeggios, a volcanic collection of blues covers from an unrivaled master of the six-string. It's hard to define what's more amazing: Derringer's innate sense of control--when to end a riff and let that last note linger and cry--or the fact that, for all the torrents of notes, he manages never, ever to overplay even one lick. Even the late great Stevie Ray Vaughan was guilty of occasionally running his marvelous riffs together in indistinguishable groups, instead of taking a breath and letting you savor that last incredible phrase. On Jackhammer Blues, Rick Derringer takes the blues guitar to the next level, a level of such surreal complexity that it simply must be heard to be believed. Hint: If you can listen to "Somebody Loan Me A Dime" with dry eyes, give up on trying to understand the blues. You ain't got 'em.

After the opening track Shake Your Money Maker, capably rendered though never a particular favorite song of mine anyway, the real fun begins. And it doesn't stop till the end, when my CD player's "REPEAT" function comes in handy. ---Hyjyljyj, amazon.com

A great choice of covers and awesome versions by a great guitarist that sounds as if he understands the blues.DERRINGER doesn't mess with the basic formula, instead he lets his outstanding guitar work do the talking. DERRINGER plays with total control and almost flawless technique. He could have spoiled it by including pyrotechnics alien to the blues ( I am sure he could be as showy as the next axe slinger ), but refrains and keeps everything tastefull and fairly true to the best of the originals. ( not many can play as well as he can ). It must be said that his vocals are OK, but no more than that. His choice of material is mostly brilliant, but a couple of tracks are questionable ( RUNNIN BLUE / FUNKY MUSIC / STILL ALIVE AND WELL ).However KEY TO THE HIGHWAY / BLUES DELUXE / KILLING FLOOR and HIDE AWAY 1962 are worth the price alone. This is on par with the best blues offerings from GARY MOORE and should be added to your collection of outstanding electric blues masters. ---Hans D Marms, amazon.com
