Mississippi John Hurt - Composer, Primary Artist

Founded in 1950 by brothers Seymour Solomon and Maynard Solomon just as the LP format was taking hold (it had been introduced to the market two years previously), Vanguard Records took full advantage of the longer playing time afforded and began life as a classical label, moving easily into jazz, then gospel, bluegrass, blues, and folk (as Joan Baez's label, they had a high profile during the 1960s folk revival), eventually experimenting with rock groups like the Frost, although folk and classical remained the label's forte. Vanguard was sold to the Welk Group in 1985. The new owners set about revitalizing the imprint's back catalog, and also began adding contemporary recordings of country and pop artists as the 21st century began. To celebrate the imprint's rapidly approaching 60th anniversary, Vanguard has released a series of brief artist samplers (Vanguard Visionaries) from the label's peak 1960s and early-'70s era, including this one from Mississippi John Hurt. A gentle blues songster with an impressive acoustic guitar style, Hurt had made a handful of recordings with OKeh Records over a pair of sessions in 1928, but never developed a professional career and dropped from sight shortly afterwards. Hurt was rediscovered in 1965 during the folk and blues revival, and the considerable guitar skills and gentle vocal approach that highlighted his 1928 recordings were still very much intact. He recorded four albums for Vanguard (one of them was actually a concert recording made at Oberlin College in 1965) in the mid-'60s, each of them a pure delight. This brief sampler draws from those four albums and includes fine versions of such traditional country blues fare as "Candy Man," "Stagolee," and "Spike Driver Blues." ---Steve Leggett, AllMusic Review

These songs were recorded in 1963 and 1964; material from these sessions appeared briefly on Canada's Rebel label, as well as Piedmont. The mood is late-night informal, although there's little, if anything, in the Hurt catalog that could not be called informal. It's not as forceful, perhaps, as his best-known recordings, and some of the songs are duplicated on other releases, but the sound quality (despite the destruction of the master tape) is OK, and Hurt fans will almost certainly find it to their liking.

Together with 1963's Avalon Blues (as opposed to the similarly titled compendium of 1928 recordings), Worried Blues represents the best of Mississippi John Hurt's later work, following his rediscovery in the early 1960s. As much a folk musician as a bluesman, Hurt included traditional and devotional music as well as blues in his oeuvre. His wide-ranging repertoire here is highlighted by "Farther Along" and "Oh Mary, Don't You Weep." Accompanied only by his guitar, Hurt is a compelling, engaging performer who eschews gimmickry. The ease with which he plays creates a peacefulness at the center of this music that's undeniably appealing. --Genevieve Williams, amazon.com

John Smith Hurt, better known as Mississippi John Hurt (July 3, 1893 or March 8, 1892— November 2, 1966) was an American country blues singer and guitarist.

Raised in Avalon, Mississippi, Hurt taught himself how to play the guitar around age nine. Singing in a loud whisper, to a melodious finger-picked accompaniment, he began to play local dances and parties while working as a sharecropper. He first recorded for Okeh Records in 1928, but these were commercial failures, and Hurt drifted out of the recording scene, where he continued his work as a farmer. After a man discovered a copy of one of his recordings, "Avalon Blues", which gave the location of his hometown, there became increased interest in his whereabouts. Tom Hoskins, a blues enthusiast, would be the first to locate Hurt in 1963. He convinced Hurt to relocate to Washington, D.C., where he was recorded by the Library of Congress in 1964. This rediscovery helped further the American folk music revival, which had led to the rediscovery of many other bluesmen of Hurt's era. Hurt entered the same university and coffeehouse concert circuit as his contemporaries, as well as other Delta blues musicians brought out of retirement. As well as playing concerts, he recorded several studio albums for Vanguard Records.

He died in Grenada, Mississippi. Material recorded by Hurt has been re-released by many record labels over the years (see discography); and his influence has extended over many generations of guitarists. Songs recorded by Hurt have been covered by Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia, Beck, Doc Watson, John McCutcheon, Taj Mahal, Bruce Cockburn, David Johansen and Guthrie Thomas.

This is the first in a multiple-volume series devoted to the Piedmont recordings Hurt made upon his rediscovery in the early '60s. They capture him with his playing and singing still intact, untouched by the world around him, a world that had changed so much since he initially recorded back in the '20s. Many of his best-known tunes are here -- "Candy Man Blues," "Salty Dog," "Spike Driver Blues," "Louis Collins," "Spanish Fandango," and the title track -- and although Hurt was to re-record them for other labels, these versions are as fine as any. There's really no one else in the blues with the gentle wistfulness of John Hurt, and this collection makes a wonderful addition to anyone's blues or folk music collection. --- Cub Koda, allmusic.com

Very few people manage to grab the brass ring more than once, but Mississippi John Hurt did just that, experiencing two career peaks four decades apart. Avalon Blues/1963 is from the Delta bluesman's second apex, when Hurt reemerged from obscurity and briefly rode a wave of new interest in folk and blues. The CD's 12 great tracks include such classics as "Richland Woman Blues," "Salty Dog," and "Casey Jones." Also here are the lively "Candy Man Blues" and the sweet "Avalon Blues." Hurt, a vibrant performer with a warm singing voice, is always enjoyable, and his latter-day recordings have a charm all their own. --Genevieve Williams

What a terrific album. I recently discovered Hurt and am struck with his grace and fluidity. The story of Hurt is fascinating as well. Just think if he had been playing and recording albums prior to the 1960s - what a wealth of beautiful grace we would have had. It is a blessing that Mississippi John has left us with an album like this one. But, really all of his songs are just as terrific as each other and each of his sparce albums are just as terrific as the other. It is such a treasure we have to listen to and be moved by. I can't say enough great things about Mississippi John and all of his work. God Bless! --- Owen P. Epstein "owene" (MCLEAN, VA USA)

No blues singer ever presented a more gentle, genial image than Mississippi John Hurt. A guitarist with an extraordinarily lyrical and refined fingerpicking style, he also sang with a warmth unique in the field of blues, and the gospel influence in his music gave it a depth and reflective quality unusual in the field. Coupled with the sheer gratitude and amazement that he felt over having found a mass audience so late in life, and playing concerts in front of thousands of people -- for fees that seemed astronomical to a man who had always made music a sideline to his life as a farm laborer -- these qualities make Hurt's recordings into a very special listening experience. Here´s the soundboard recording of the "friends of old time music concert", School of Medicine, Alumni Hall New York, N.Y., December 13, 1963.

Mississippi John Hurt did a live 21-song set on April 15, 1965, at Oberlin College in Ohio, a scant two years after his rediscovery in 1963, and a year before his death in 1966. Hurt was remarkably consistent as a performer, whether you listen to his famous 1920s Okeh tracks, his rediscovery studio work for Vanguard Records, or the handful of live shows like this one: the skill and delivery is always steady, professional, and charming. Among the highlights in this set is his intricate and atmospheric slide guitar work on "Talking Casey," one of the few times Hurt abandoned his trademark three-finger guitar picking style. This concert has been issued in various configurations and sequences by several labels under different titles and with different cover art over the years including In Concert (Magnum), Frankie & Albert (Tomato), Live! (Columbia River), Satisfying Blues (Collectables), Revisited (Varese), and Mississippi John Hurt (Dressed to Kill). Vanguard added a handful of live tracks recorded at Hurt's workshop appearance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival to the 21 original Oberlin songs to make 2002's Live, which is probably the best choice out there. Just make sure you get the 1920s stuff first. ---Steve Leggett, cduniverse.com

Mississippi John Hurt recorded 13 country-blues songs for the Okeh Electric Records company in 1928. Then he vanished. Actually, he never left his hometown of Avalon, Mississippi. He simply put the guitar down. It was the Great Depression, times were tough, money was scarce, and he needed to work. Nearly 30 years later, a blues enthusiast tracked him down and took him back to Washington, D.C. Suddenly, Mississippi John's musical career resumed as quickly as it had been halted. These first songs cut in the late 1920s, however, represent Hurt in his youthful prime; the 1928 recordings represent the greatest presentation of his melancholy voice and hypnotic guitar playing. --Percy Keegan

This ordering of thirteen blues, ballads, rags, and spirituals features the gentlest of Delta performers. Sharecropper/songster Hurt sings confidently in a throaty but quiet voice and picks guitar patterns that tell of his inner delight. His winsome music-from the John Henry tale "Spike Driver Blues" to the smilingly off-color "Candy Man Blues"-is essential listening. Bear with the surface noise of the 78s. --Frank John Hadley 1993

Today is Mississippi John Hurt's first and finest studio release since his "rediscovery" on his Avalon farm by folklorist Tom Hoskins in 1963. Eclipsed possibly only by his earlier 1928 Sessions, this album shows a more mature Hurt picking his way through standards and originals after the Depression years and Hurt's fall into obscurity before the folk revival of the 1960s. It shows, however, that all that the great bluesman has lost is years; his voice retains its characteristic Buddha-esque warmth and it is still difficult to believe that there is just one man playing on the seemingly effortless guitar work. The music on the album comes from a variety of different influences, from the fun and poppy "Hot Time in Old Town Tonight" and "Coffee Blues," to the bluesy standards "Candy Man" (Hurt's most famous song) and "Spike Driver's Blues" to the soulful spirituals "Louis Collins" and "Beulah Land." Hurt's tranquil guitar work -- mixing country, Scottish folk, and Delta blues -- strings all of the songs along the same simple and elegant thread. Hurt himself never could explain his guitar playing, as he used to say, "I just make it sound like I think it ought to." Regardless, that sound, along with a mellow and heartfelt voice, wizened here by decades, combine to make Today an unforgettable whole. A truly essential album of the folk revival, unrivaled in its beauty and warmth. ---David Freedlander, Rovi
