One of the few things that can make the holidays even better is not just Christmas music, but bluesy Christmas music. Luckily, David Gogo has you covered this holiday season as he’s recently released a Yuletide-themed 9-song album, Christmas With the Blues.

Gogo celebrates this particular December with a range of holiday songs, some well-known and others not so much. 5 of them have the word Christmas in the title, 2 name “Santa Claus” directly, and he even includes the ever-favorite “Little Drummer Boy.”

The music feels familiar, but still has a special cozy quality that makes it an ideal choice to celebrate with, away from the cold and closer to where the warmth of Christmas is already glowing.

Gogo tries to inject some additional fun by keeping things light, as with the humorous “Let’s Get a Real Tree,” which tells the tale of Christmas with a hippie girlfriend. Gogo’s aim seems to be to mostly steer from conventional Christmas musical themes, which can feel a bit strange at times (such as the particularly cheeky song “Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin’).

The album is a worthy holiday romp though, and Gogo can be commended for bringing together two things very close to America’s heart: Christmas and the blues. At times it might not be a perfect bulls-eye, but as we’re told with the Christmas season, it’s the thought that counts.

In the end, Christmas with the Blues is a worthwhile album, and if you love blues and want a friendly reminder of the reason for the season, it’s more than recommended. After all, what’s not to like about any Christmas with the Blues? ---Tyler Quiring, bluesrockreview.com

"I can't fit into my skinny black jeans anymore," laments veteran blues rocker David Gogo on the appropriately titled, hard-driving, Stones-inflected, and likely autobiographical "Getting Old." Only in his early forties at the time of its 2011 release, he's obviously not letting fears of his advancing years slow or dull his attack, as his sixth release in a decade shows. Gogo isn't a particularly distinctive guitarist, but as this disc's title implies (Soul-Bender is also the name of the Fulltone guitar pedal he uses); he infuses plenty of soul with his bluesy rock & roll. To that end, a crackling version of Michael Jackson's "The Way You Make Me Feel," played as a high-energy swamp rocker with female backing vocals and horns, seems like a Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes cover instead of a hit for the King of Pop. Gogo is in tough voice throughout, charging into the rugged "Slow It Down" and a slinky slide guitar-driven burner "Do You Know How It Feels?" with raw nerves exposed. As usual, he uncorks some terrific covers (in addition to Jackson's); stampeding his blues guitar leads on the Robin Trower/Procol Harum nugget "Whisky Train" and the Doors' underappreciated "The Changeling" with chops and imagination. Gogo slows things down for a bit of mid-album R&B/gospel on a terrifically moving "I Found a Love," first sung by Wilson Pickett with the Falcons, and "Time Is Killing Me" (there's that getting-old theme again), a self-penned gem with the sharply observant chorus of "I always thought I was just killing time/but time has been killing me." An opening Allman Brothers Band via "Statesboro Blues"-inspired romp with Elmore James' "Please Find My Baby" is raucous enough but doesn't jell with the rest of the set's vibe. Gogo double- and occasionally triple-tracks his guitar yet the production and especially the mixing keep the sound open, airy, and uncluttered. This is right up there with his finest work, and it's arguably his best, so despite his own misgivings about his age, Gogo might just now be hitting his musical prime. ---Hal Horowitz, AllMusic Review

Although still relatively young in blues years, Canada's top blues guitarist has accomplished many things in his career. So far David Gogo has three Juno nominations, was named Musician of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards, was twice named Guitarist of the Year at the Maple Blues Awards, and has been bestowed with the CBC Saturday Night Blues' Great Canadian Blues Award for a lifetime contribution to the blues in Canada. Gogo has performed extensively throughout North America, has toured Europe over a dozen times and is firmly established in the North American blues festival scene. David Gogo's continuing successes have him busier than ever and happy to find acceptance as a world class blues man.

For his 10th album, Different Views, David definitely had some unique sights to inspire him during the recording process. Instead of the usual confines of your typical recording studio, the bulk of the album was recorded at his home - overlooking the 160-acre Christmas tree farm and forest that make up the Gogo family compound. The keyboard tracks were recorded at Rick Hopkins' (Colin James, Barney Bentall) home overlooking breath-taking Lions Bay, British Columbia.

The album is produced by Russell Broom (Jann Arden, Sam Roberts, The Dudes, Wil) with guests Shaun Verrault (Wide Mouth Mason), roots diva Carolyn Mark, and jazz great Phil Dwyer popping in at various times. With the drums set up in the foyer and guitar amps in the laundry room, the Gogo house was filled with music and good food. At times, Gogo wasn't sure if he was a musician or a caterer! The fact that the clock wasn't ticking, along with Gogo's vast collection of vinyl albums, vintage guitars and pop culture memorabilia at their fingertips encouraged a stimulating creative environment. This combination has added variety and spice unlike previous Gogo efforts without losing focus of what he's all about. --- Editorial Reviews

I have made no secret of the fact that I believe that Walter Trout is the reigning king of the blues/rock guitarists. He has paid his dues, earned the respect of his peers, is recording the best material of his career, and plays live with great passion and intensity. However, as was the case with all those before him, there will come a day when he is replaced at the top of the heap. Some have left the mountain top through retirement or death while others simply lose the fire in their gut. Someday, another player will stand atop the list and I do not imagine that we have ever seen a day when there were so many potential "heir apparents". There are more gifted blues/rock artists around these

Though there is a large number of worthy future contenders for the crown, I would be hard pressed to come up with someone who has a more legitimate chance of someday reaching that apex than Canadian born blues/rock guitarist David Gogo. Gogo is an upper tier guitarist whose brand of blues/rock will hit you in the chin with the force of a Clark Kent uppercut. I first heard of his work after the release of his live Dine Under the Stars CD, which is an intense and fiery showcase of Gogo's incredible ability with six string instruments of assorted varieties. His latest release for Cordova Bay records, Halfway To Memphis is a studio recording, but still an intense one nonetheless. His music is not for "blues purists" or the faint of heart in general, but if you are a fan (like me) of aggressive blues/rock guitar, then

David Gogo in Prince George 2001 (Prince George Citizen)This latest release is the fourth for Gogo in the past 3 years, as he continues to build the kind of outstanding body of work worthly of potential future royalty. The CD is a mixture of 7 covers and 4 Gogo originals. Regardless of style or tempo, each is filled with monstrously powerful guitar and Gogo's passionate vocals, which have steadily improved with each of his releases. Take a listen to Muddy's Louisiana Blues, Eddie Hinton's (I Gotta) Testify or the Gogo original Bad Faces and you will soon understand that this is an artist who can go just about as far in this genre as any before him and perhaps someday even farther. ---Tom Branson, davidgogo.com

Blues guitarist David Gogo was born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, and received his first guitar at the age of five (having been given a ukulele the year before). He honed his skills for the next decade and, by the age of 16, he was gaining work as a professional musician. Inspired by a meeting with Stevie Ray Vaughan, Gogo became even more committed, forming a the Persuaders, which went from a post-high school band to one that was soon opening for acts like Johnny Winter, Buddy Guy, and Albert Collins. Following a stint in Europe which found the Persuaders opening for the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Gogo signed a solo deal with EMI Records. While writing material for his debut, Gogo managed to find time to appear on Tom Cochrane's highly successful Mad Mad World album. When David Gogo arrived in 1994, it was a critical success and Gogo earned a Juno nomination. However, due to shifting label personnel, the record was not given a U.S. release and Gogo was being pressured to pursue a more commercial route. Choosing to strike out on his own, Gogo released Dine Under the Stars, which had been recorded live in his hometown, on his own. A distribution deal in France led to a record deal with Canadian independent label Cordova Bay and the subsequent release of Change of Pace, a more rock-oriented affair, and the acoustic Bare Bones, which was a return to his blues roots. In 2002, Gogo issued his fifth album, Skeleton Key, which combined both electric and acoustic arrangements as well as a mixture of original material and covers of songs by artists like Stevie Wonder and Depeche Mode. ---Tom Demalon, allmusic.com
