This is a lot of three four-record box sets, the complete Genesis series in three volumes, issued in England in the early Seventies (the first is undated, the others are from 1973 and 1974) and never offered in the U.S.--which provide a still-unequalled historical overview of the archetypal blues/rhythm 'n' blues record company called Chess Records, tracing the path of major blues performers northwards, from the Delta to Memphis to Chicago, and the resulting evolution of both electrified blues and Chess. The three sets are 6641 047, The Beginnings of Rock (a name no doubt chosen as a marketing ploy, aimed at England's young "beat" fans c.1970); 6641 125 Vol. 2 Memphis to Chicago; and 6641 174, Vol. 3 Sweet Home Chicago. The four records in each set feature founding giants of Chicago blues--Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter Jacobs, Sonny Boy Williamson--as well as great less-known figures Jimmy Rogers, Otis Spann, Elmore James, even Memphis Minnie and Big Bill Broonzy late in their careers, and unknowns like Blue Smitty, Harmonica Frank, and Big Boy Spires. The selections, 14 per disc (16 on Vol. 3), are a mixture of famous tracks and (at that time) still-unreleased rarities, pressed from master tapes as well as collector 78s; and each box houses a splendid 20-page book rich with photos and brilliant essays by Mike Leadbitter and (for the third) Mike Rowe. While there have been many superior Chess Records reissues in the compact disc era, no other set/sets have quite equalled this rare Genesis trio for scope and notation and musical selections. Exterior boxes have seen some handling: the first is VG with much edge-wear, the second VG+ with corner breaks, and the third VG++, showing only miniscule wear at the corners. The three books within are pretty much VG++; and the all-important records are in superb shape: VG++ in the first box, Mint- in the other two. A blues set for the ages. --- abebooks.com
