Swiss boogie woogie & blues piano prodigy Silvan Zingg set out to stir up the international boogie audience with this CD - and succeeded. Let's start out with the package. Without a shadow of a doubt in my mind ...stands out as the most stylish I've seen so far. Absolutely flawless. Needless to say, the audible output is immaculate as well.

So where exactly can those "Changes in boogie woogie" be spotted? Well, they stem from Silvan's fresh approach to standards such as Meade Lux Lewis' "Honky tonk train blues" and W.C. Handy's "St. Louis blues" as well as from a bunch of innovative self-penned songs. His personal take on the revered classic "Honky Tonk Train Blues" is somewhat unique due to Milani who contrived to accompany Silvan's rolling piano with an equally rollicking beat. Every time I listen to it, I get the feeling that I can actually see that old steam locomotive start moving. However, my personal favorite on this CD is Zingg's reinterpretation of this standard, aptly entitled "New honky tonk train". Despite having estranged parts of the original to a degree that they are almost unrecognizable, he always manages to get back to Lewis' original leitmotif. What I found to be very interesting as well was the fact that Silvan is one of the first young boogie pianists to pay tribute to El Maestro, Axel Zwingenberger, with a stomping rendition of Axel's "Steel dragon". Yeah, this CD is all about trains - therefore Mr. Zingg had to contribute his own take on railroads & steam engines as well: "Spanish rolls drag". There's also a lot of potential in Silvan's attempts at cutting blues. "Blues mood just before midnight" for instance sounds very promising...technically speaking, these tracks are absolutely fine...piece of art! ---K.Going, boogiegroove.ch
