Bo Carter (Armenter "Bo" Chatmon) had an unequaled capacity for creating sexual metaphors in his songs, specializing in such ribald imagery as "Banana in Your Fruit Basket," "Pin in Your Cushion," and "Your Biscuits Are Big Enough for Me." One of the most popular bluesmen of the '30s, he recorded enough material for several reissue albums, and he was quite an original guitar picker, or else three of those albums wouldn't have been released by Yazoo. (Carter employed a number of different keys and tunings on his records, most of which were solo vocal and guitar performances.) Carter's facility extended beyond the risqué business to more serious blues themes, and he was also the first to record the standard "Corrine Corrina" (1928). Guitar, Vocals – Bo Carter

This Yazoo release compiles fourteen sides by Bo Carter recorded between 1931 and 1940. Carter was an extremely prolific recording artist, and "Twist it Babe" is a solid introduction to his body of solo work. His originality and virtousity on the guitar, often overlooked due to his propensity for double entendre, put him technically on par with other "uncopyable" bluesmen such as Blind Lemon Jefferson, and Robert Pete Williams.

If you have a problem with "dirty blues", then this album, and Bo Carter all together, are really not for you, however, he is a master of country blues guitar and this album is a great place to start. The production and sound are as clean and clear as you will find in the 1930's.

The listener of this album will witness his utter disregard for standard blues phrasing and cliched licks. You will discover through repeated listening that his seemingly simple and catchy songs are actually quite complex arrangements, featuring skills and techniques that remain absolutely unique within the blues vernacular. The combination of melodic, harmonic genius and command of counterpoint, and polyrhythmic bass lines are facilitated by the use of all five fingers of his picking hand, and five different tunings on the guitar. ---Jeff Melvin

Armenter Chatmon, alias Bo Carter, left a sizable thumbprint on 1930s blues. His output as a member of the Mississippi Sheiks is unremarkable, but his solo work retains an amazing freshness. It should be noted that this CD does not represent his most sexual material. "Banana in Your Fruit Basket", another Yazoo Records opus, offers 14 of his most explicit songs. While I don't find any of this music objectionable, the reviewers who preceded me are right about this disc. If you have qualms about racy lyrics, neither "Twist it, Babe" nor "Banana in Your Fruit Basket" will elicit any smiles. For blues hounds, both CDs are emerald-pure lowdown fun. Bo Carter is the alias for singer/guitarist Bo Chatmon, a member of the famous Chatmon family from Mississippi (which produced 13 musically capable children). Notorious for his double-entendre blues, Carter based his songs around sexual metaphors and the results were, unsurprisingly, widely popular. If there were such a thing as parental warning stickers in the 1930s, they would have been applied liberally to Carter's releases. On Banana in Your Fruit Basket (the companion to Twist It Baby), Yazoo brings together 14 more Carter sides from the 1930s. A cursory glance at track titles alone tells a great deal: "Mashing That Thing," "Don't Mash My Digger So Deep," "Pin in Your Cushion," "My Pencil Won't Write Anymore." The themes in Carter's music were certainly pervasive in the country-blues of the period, but they were rarely as explicit. Whereas one singer might ask "Baby, where'd you stay last night? You got the hair all tangled and you ain't talkin' right" (a stock blues verse), few would ask the same woman "Baby, what kind of scent is that?" when she walks through the door. Often, Carter's metaphors are so thin that the results have little value beyond their novelty. Musically, Carter has a relaxed, clear, and fairly indistinct singing style and a fluid, fingerpicking guitar attack to match it. While Banana in Your Fruit Basket paints an accurate picture of Bo Chatmon's alter ego, the music is very much a product of its time. Giving insight into what people appreciated in their entertainment, it also feels like proof that not much has changed. ---Nathan Bush

I'm a blues fan, not easy listening jazzy blues, but the gritty, soulful kind. So when I say I bought this cd because I was going "Oh wow, no, this can't be real.", giggling to myself the whole time, I mean it as no insult to the blues genre. I couldn't quite remember how I stumbled across Bo, and I just now remembered: I was researching the song I was named after (Correna, Correna) and stumbled across his name on wikipedia. Searching further, I came across this.

So I laughed. A lot. I giggled until my face got a little red, and I called up my friends and told them they had to come over and hear this. And they did, and they laughed, too. But with time, my feeling about this cd has changed. I actually LIKE it. I pop this cd into my cd player and it mellows me. It's almost a little witty, and it has a great sound.

So while originally bought on a ridiculous, silly whim, I have come to find this cd in my cd player quite often. It always amazes me when that happens. ---Karina Presto
