Meena Cryle who is widely praised for her exceptional voice and her musical partner, guitar-player Chris Fillmore, write all of their songs, which are influenced by the Blues genre, themselves. Their repertoire ranges from Soul, R’n’B and Rock’n’Roll to electric Blues. Following their debut album “Try Me” their second album “feel me” was released in 2012. Some of the songs were performed during the Artscape festival's main music stage, in Baltimore and received overwhelmingly good response from the audience as well as the media. Meena Cryle urodziła się w 1977 roku w małej austriackiej miejscowości. Zaczęła śpiewać bardzo wcześnie bo podobno zaraz jak się tylko nauczyła mówić. Pierwszą piosenkę skomponowała w wieku siedmiu lat. Z muzyką miała do czynienia od małego bowiem w jej domu wspólne, rodzinne śpiewanie było ulubioną rozrywką. Pierwszy zespół założyła w wieku zaledwie piętnastu lat. Była to formacja grająca psychodelicznego rocka. Wśród muzyków jej towarzyszących był wówczas gitarzysta Chris Fillmore, który notabene udziela się również na jej obu dotychczas wydanych płytach. Debiutowała w 2010 albumem „Try Me” wydanym pod skrzydłami wielce zasłużonej dla propagowania bluesa wytwórni Ruf Records. Wśród jej sukcesów warto wymienić zdobycie drugiego miejsca na European Blues Challenge w 2011 roku.

Najnowszą płytę Meeny zatytułowaną „Feel Me” otwiera żwawy, ognisty blues-rock „Movin' On” ozdobiony piękną solówką Chrisa Fillmore. Świetne otwarcie.

Moją lekką konsternację wywołał kolejny utwór czyli „I Was Made For Loving You” bo jest to kawałek znany z wykonania amerykańskich „przebierańców” czyli Kiss. Wersja jaką zaproponowała Meena jest leciutką piosenką z pięknie brzmiącą sekcją dętą The Hot Pants Road Club. Po prostu urocza i rozbrajająca interpretacja.

„Stay Away From Me Baby” to klasycznie brzmiący chicagowskimi tonami bluesior. Niezwykle korzenne i stylowe wykonanie. Świetnie prezentuje się nasycony emocjami wokal Meeny. Ponownie zachwyca gitara Chrisa Fillmore.

Ballada „If I Need You One More Time” poświęcona jest pamięci zmarłego przed laty brata Meeny. Piękna kompozycja chyba najlepsza z całej płyty pełna emocji i dramatyzmu. Rozpoczyna się niewinnie i spokojnie bo tylko wokal i gitara akustyczna ale potem rozkręca się i potężnieje.

„If You Had A Diamond” to z kolei coś w stylu lat 60-tych. Ponownie możemy podziwiać w akcji sekcję dętą. Chris Fillmore popisuje się solówką świetnie pasującą (brzmienie gitary) do klimatu utworu.

„Beg Like A Sinner” to kolejny bluesujący utwór tym razem z motoryką prawie jak w „Rollin' and Tumblin'”.

Tytułowy utwór z płyty to dla odmiany klasyczne country pięknie zaśpiewane z manierą pasującą do tego gatunku. Instrumentacja też jak najbardziej apropos łącznie z cicho brzmiącą w tle gitarą pedal steel.

Kolejny cover na płycie to znany z wykonania Etty James i Koko Taylor „Come To Mama”. Meena to oczywiście nie Etta i nawet nie porywa się na jakiekolwiek współzawodnictwo. Interpretacja zaproponowana przez Meene i jej zespół jest bardzo ciekawa, ubrana w mocny, prawie rockowy podkład i takiż drive. Pięknie brzmi z rzadka odzywający się soulowy chórek i dęciaki.

Na uspokojenie tempa niezwykle nastrojowa ballada „My Empty Bed”. Tytuł właściwie mówi wszystko o warstwie lirycznej. Jest o rozstaniu i niespełnionej miłości. Kolejna niezwykle udana kompozycja. Oszczędnie ale pięknie zinstrumentalizowana. Co najważniejsze utwór wcale nie nudzi. Gitara dobro rozpoczyna „Lord Have Mercy”. Ponownie przyjemne bluesowe kołysanie. Utwór rozkręca się powoli chociaż cały czas czuje się takie podskórnie napięcie a kulminacją jest ogniste solo Chrisa Fillmore zagrane techniką slide.

Kolejna udana kompozycja jaką jest „Singing Songs”. Tym razem jest to po prostu rockowa piosenka z bogatymi soulowymi dodatkami. Ponownie dużo emocji no i niezawodny Chris Fillmore na gitarze. Tytuł ostatniego utworu pasuje na koniec płyty jak ulał. „My Performance Is Over” to słodka ballada w stylu lat 60-tych.

Już z powyższego krótkiego opisu wynika, że płyta „Feel Me” jest stylistycznie bardzo urozmaicona. Moim osobistym zdaniem jest lepsza od debiutu. Zdecydowanie ciekawiej wypada wokal Meeny – jest jakby odważniejsza, bardziej pewna siebie i swojego głosu. Wszystkie kompozycje własne na bardzo dobrym poziomie. Pięknie zagrane z dużą dawką emocji i przyjemnego pulsowania. Nawet ballady, które z definicji mają prawo przynudzać i smędzić wypadają niezwykle ciekawie. Jej pierwszy album trochę sztucznie ozdobiono zapraszając wielu uznanych wykonawców m.in. Coco Montoya, Eric Sardinas może to w celu podniesienia atrakcyjności tak aby płyta debiutantki nie przepadła w całej masie innych wydawnictw. Na „Feel Me” zrezygnowano z takiego zabiegu i możemy podziwiać wyłącznie Meenę i jej świetny zespół towarzyszący. ---Robert Trusiak, bluesonline.pl

Meena was born 1977 in a small catholic upper austrian village as the third child of a master electrician and his wife. In summer she walked around barefoot, sheltered among cows, meadows, trees and proud of her scratched knees. When she was three Meena had her first encounters with ski, being pushed down the hill. "That was cool", she rememembers chuckling. "Apart from that my people successfully tried to get me into church which was easy because I liked the sound of the organ. My mother taught me a lot during my girlhood. The world is big, she said. And my dad told me to look for a safe place on earth.

When Meena learned to speak she immediately was taught how to sing. Grandpa played the zither, mother and sister sang together with her. Good old folk from upper austria, you know. Aside from that Meena and her sister many a time had to volunteer songs at the local restaurant. "I wasn´t to keen about that, but we were given icecream and lemonade. Honestly, that was cool, because singing at the restaurant was the only occassion for stuff like that. So I learned - among other things - musical harmony and polyphonic singing from early on. I wrote my first songs being seven years old. Music was something quite natural in our everyday life and far away from commercialism. Just like eating and sleeping, music was part of our life."

Meena was eleven when her brother died. He was only seventeen. "And I still miss him so much, especially as he gave me my very first audio tape. A compilation of music from the Seventies. And there was Jimi Hendrix who casted his spell over me with ´Voodoo Chile´."

Four years later Meena founded her first band in company with a young guitar player. "We were a psychedelic rock band in those days and we were lucky to play many wild shows. It was a wonderful time. Apart from that I was a quite normal, pubescent, school denying teenager with a liability to rebellion and a star-eyed little idealist who wanted to improve the world. This is why I went to Mozamique after having finished my degree. I worked there at a women´s refuge. Then I traveled through Europe and northern USA where I fell in love with Chicago, the city´s atmosphere, it´s people and music. But Chicago was one thing, then came Vienna. In Vienna I entered my name under my first managment contract." In the meantime word had got around. Meena´s naturalness and power on stage, her authentic voice had aroused interest. Her approach to music and singing was and is something special, powered by Meena´s desire to deliver her art, driven by her desire for freedom. "It was more than a wish, there was an inner force in me to become a musician. Singing is my vocation, but my parents still don´t regard it like that."

The first thing she did was putting a band together. She worked on stage with locals and musicians of international reputation as well, she played low paid and well played gigs. She met producers and managers, booking agents, co-producers, publishers and label bosses. "Somebody tried to make a pop singer of myself, a rock queen, even a Tina Turner or a Janis Joplin double. As a matter of fact, I was asked to learn the corresponding show routine. To no avail. It would have been easier to tame my wild curls. And then, at the end, then Thomas Ruf entered the place. He decided - against the regulations of the mainstream music bizniz - to take me under his wings. Me, a rough singer, clinged to the blues. A singer just sledded down from the mountains on to the shaky ground of the record industry." Ruf flew Meena across the pond right into the Mecca of the blues where she had an encounter of special importance.

"He brought me and my guitar player to Jim Gaines in Memphis for recording our first official CD. From that moment on it felt for me like coming home. As if my life in 1977 could have begun right here in Stantonville."
