Blues guitarist Jimmy Dawkins stands out as a solemn, thoughtful figure. With his ax cradled in his arms, staring through his shades into the crowd but not really seeing them, he seems merged with his songs on a higher realm. His voice pleads, his fingers answer with super-quick guitar riffs which complement each other beautifully.

Today Jimmy Dawkins is a seasoned Chicago blues veteran still actively recording albums. This CD was his first album as leader and it offers a gilmpse into the soul and character of a great blues man. First released in 1969, after guitarist Jimmy Dawkins had served a long apprenticeship as a sideman in the Chicago electric blues scene, Fast Fingers remains one of the finest pure electric blues albums of its era. Dawkins proves to be a solid songwriter and an able singer, although the best moments on the album invariably come when he tears off a casually perfect, deeply soulful, but never showy electric solo. Highlights include the stomping instrumental "Triple Trebles," featuring an outstanding Dawkins solo over a funky horn-driven rhythm, and the mellow, laid-back opener, "It Serves Me Right to Suffer." The album was finally reissued on CD in 1998 with a new cover and two fine outtakes from the original sessions, "Sad and Blues" (which features an exceptional extended solo by Dawkins) and "Back Home Blues," which is a 1969 recording with a new (1998) vocal by Dawkins. --- Stewart Mason, allmusic.com

1971 Jimmy Dawkins went to Europe and when he was in Paris he took the time to record this album. The band is 2/3 French, the only American player is Mickey Baker on guitar (The Mickey Baker?). The liner notes tells it all: "Even the less informed listener will understand, in hearing this collection, the extent that this music, so charged with emotion and contained violence, corresponds to the mixed feelings of frustration and hope of the black population of the great American cities." Well, well. Anyway I kind of like this album, in my opinion it´s one of the best of Dawkins European albums. --- hem.fyristorg.com

The winter of 1994 in Chicago was particularly brutal. The kind of freezing, miserable winter that can numb your soul and give you the blues. Blues and pain. The influence of these conditions are behind this new Jimmy Dawkins release. Jimmy stuffed his amp in the trunk of his Cadillac, grabbed his big guitar and his drummer Ray Scott, and drove straight on through from Chicago to Atlanta. The next two days were spent holed up in KALA studios, where Jimmy and the band ripped into the piercing, tormented set of blues contained on this disc. The only luxury was that we had 16 ounce beers instead of the regular kind. Producer Bryan Cole and engineer Edd Miller silently smiled at each other as the tape ran and the shredding guitar lines sprang forth from Jimmy's trademark Gibson. The reigning king of Chicago's west side expelled all the feelings that had built up after extensive international road travel. James Henry "Jimmy" Dawkins (born October 24, 1936, Tchula, Mississippi) is an American blues guitarist and singer. He is generally considered a part of the "West Side Sound" of Chicago blues.

He moved to Chicago in 1955. He worked in a box factory, and started to play local blues clubs, gaining a reputation as a session musician.

In 1969, thanks to the efforts of his friend Magic Sam, he released his first album Fast Fingers on Delmark Records, winning the "Grand Prix du Disque" from the Hot Club de France. In 1971 Delmark released his second album All For Business with singer, Andrew "Big Voice" Odom, and the guitarist, Otis Rush. Dawkins also toured in the late 1970s backed up by James Solberg (of Luther Allison and The Nighthawks fame) on guitar and Jon Preizler (The Lamont Cranston Band), a Hammond B-3 player known for his soulful jazz influenced style. Other musicians that toured with Jimmy Dawkins in the late 70's were Jimi Schutte [drummer], Sylvester Boines [bass], Rich Kirch [guitar], and Billy Flynn [guitar]. With this combination of musicians Jimmy also toured Europe.

Dawkins began to tour in Europe and Japan and recorded more albums in the United States and Europe. Dawkins also contributed a column to the blues magazine Living Blues. In the 1980s he released few recordings, but began his own record label, Leric Records, and was more interested in promoting other artists, including Taildragger, Queen Sylvia Embry, Little Johnny Christian and Nora Jean Wallace.

Jimmy Dawkins' infrequent albums are always a joy, and that was the case when he made his first sojourn to Europe in 1970 and recorded LPs for Black & Blue, Vogue, and Excello in France and England. This disc features eight numbers pairing Dawkins and the great Gatemouth Brown and another four matching him with equally sensational Otis Rush. The Brown/Dawkins tandem duel, match, and challenge each other as Dawkins' sometimes enigmatic, sometimes bemused and often compelling vocals set the stage for their instrumental encounters. The same holds true on the Rush/Dawkins cuts. While Rush provides searing licks and twisting solos, Dawkins' singing sets the tone with its urgent inflections and weary, resigned quality. --Ron Wynn, allmusic.com
