With a spin on the classic blues genre, Jan James brings a raw and brash honesty to her powerful vocals. Drawing on her blues and country roots, combined with the strong guitar performance of her long-time partner Craig Calvert, Jan James has created an engaging and thoroughly relatable album. From political tracks that speak truth to power, to the universal theme of love, Calling All Saints is a collection of songs that pull you in and won’t let you go. Bringing to life a host of vibrant characters, the stories here will keep you captivated. The country style story-telling, the emotionality of her delivery and the strong instrumentation bring the album to life. Fans of her past work will recognize the hallmarks that make her sound so successful. First time listeners will be drawn in by her unique and natural talent on this vivid and powerfully honest album.

The tale of Jan James reads as though it comes right out of the inner soul of American music. Her sound was born in her home-state of Michigan then she found her way to Chicago, home of the blues. Her powerful sound and message resonate globally. She has an arresting, soulful voice which, as her reputation as an artist grew, earned her the recognition of "Best Female Vocalist" by the Detroit Metro Times.

Her powerful vocals were first discovered why singing in a church choir. For James that emotion and energy translated naturally into a deep understanding of RnB and Rock-n-Roll Soul. With these beginnings Jan James is an artist with a journey that feels almost mythic. She has continued that journey through each of her albums and tours.

Raised in central Michigan on a family-run fishing resort, Jan's talent was obvious early on. "The more I tried out the voice I learned to use in the church choir," says Jan, "the more I liked it," and so did everyone else. She was continually invited to sing at public gatherings and like all the great artists-the seduction and thrill of performing onstage soon matched her talent.

Jan met her partner, songwriter/guitarist Craig Calvert, while they were both attending Michigan State. She was working in a duo, performing regularly at a small cafe. When she needed to replace her guitar player, the timing was right. It was not only right, it was perfect. Craig was taking a break from his punk band (The FIX); they met and developed a musical chemistry that has evolved into a big sound and feel that is colored with RnB, blues, soul and the sweet dynamics of the best rock.

Continuing their legend-laced journey, they moved to Chicago. The big city blues capital was good to them, and they to it. They became favorites in such venues as The Park West, Buddy Guy's Blues Legends, Taste of Chicago and The House of Blues. They shared the stage with Bon Jovi, Koko Taylor, John Mayall, Little Feat, James Brown, Alice Cooper, Jeff Beck and B.B. King. They cut their first demo, a powerhouse CD called "Last Train," picked up by the Dutch label Provogue, in yet another example of the wide appeal that American music has throughout the world. Jan’s music especially filled with undeniable heart and soul that has a universal appeal.

Jan launched a promotional tour of acoustic and electric performances aired on radio and television throughout The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Scandinavia, along with a feature on NBC's television program, Talking Blues. The press raved: "Voices of the caliber of Jan James are rare in today's pop music" and "Her upbeat rock, RnB, blues is exceptionally radio-friendly and very stylishly executed." More albums followed: "Soul Desire," "The Color of Rose," "Limousine Blues," “Drive Me Home,” “Live at the Intersection” and “Ring Around the Moon” all of which enjoyed critical acclaim.

Comparisons to legendary artists are often soaked in hype and are sometimes unfair both to the legend and to the musician who is carrying on the legacy. But sometimes they are necessary. Sometimes they must be made; not just for the sake of similarity but for the sake of the importance that keeping something so stark and vital alive means to the art.

Jan performed at Chicago's Royal George Theater in the starring role of Janis Joplin in a play based on Janis’ letters and songs. Along with the standing ovations there was so much more. There was the aura of a major talent. There was not only the power of what Janis had left for us, there was the power in what Jan James now does brilliantly.

Jan's latest album, "Calling All Saints," is raw expression of her talent and passion. With a spin on the classic blues genre, Jan James brings a raw and brash honesty to her powerful vocals. Drawing on her blues and country roots, combined with the strong guitar performance of her long-time partner Craig Calvert, Jan James has created an engaging and thoroughly relatable album. Both unique and undeniable in her appeal. This is Jan James. ---cdbaby.com

Tina Turner, Janis Joplin, The Rolling Stones’ Jan James’ performances have always provoked these comparisons. With her sandpapered voice and tough-blossom ethos, Jan has clasped the enthusiasm and acclaim of US and European audiences to her blues-rocking heart.

The Detroit Metro Times voted her “Best Female Vocalist” just in time to send her off to her new hometown, Chicago, where she soon became a favorite in venues such as Buddy Guy’s Blues Legends, Taste of Chicago, and The House of Blues. Along the way Jan has shared the stage with greats such as Koko Taylor, BB King, The Divinyls, John Mayall, Little Feat, and James Brown.

In time the buzz spread to Europe and Jan went on to release her European debut album Last Train on the Netherlands’ Provogue label. This collection was co-produced by Jan, Craig Calvert, and well-known Chicago producer Steve Shafer. Mastered by Greg Calbi (famous for his work on classic albums by The Rolling Stones, John Lennon, Cheap Trick, and many others), Last Train’s infectious mix of flat-out rock-and-roll, blues, and heady gospel music received spirited praise from the European press.

In response, Jan embarked on a promotional tour of acoustic and electric performances aired on radio and television throughout The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany and Scandanavia with a feature on NBC’s television program Talking Blues. Again the press raved, “Voices of the caliber of Jan James’ are rare in today’s pop music...” and “Her upbeat rock/blues is exceptionally radio-friendly and very stylishly executed.”

Meanwhile, in Chicago, Jan was lured to the stage in the starring role of Janis Joplin, performing 20 of the late great's classics. She easily adopted the stage persona of the woman to whom she is most often compared. Audiences loved the results and responded with standing ovations.

Comparisons, however, are meant to be outgrown. Two more CD’s, Soul Desire and The Color of Rose have since been released on the Dutch label, the latter as a passionate sequel to Last Train. Now, Limousine Blues, James’ most traditional blues album, awaits its 2003 release. With its ten original songs in the roots genre James returns to what she calls the “front porch” of the blues, referring to the Delta style popularized by artists like Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters. This recording was done at Bombay Studios in Chicago. James’ partner, the songwriter and guitarist Craig Calvert, teamed up with Terry Abrahamson (Bus Driver, Muddy Waters) to pen the first track called Gonna Build Me a Man.

The long anticipated release of Jan's 7th CD "Drive Me Home" is finally here. ---cdbaby.com

Chicago blues artist Jan James releases her fifth album! Limousine Blues (Blue Palace Records) is James's most traditional blues album offering 10 original songs in the roots genre.

James returns to what she calls the "front porch" of blues, referring to the Delta style popularized by artist like Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters. Recorded in Chicago at Bombay Studios.

James and her songwriting/guitarist partner, Craig Calvert have teamed up with songwriter Terry Abrahamson, known for his work on Muddy Waters' "Hard Again" release on Epic. "Build Me A Man" opens the CD, this swampy blues stomp demands a "better man" with the intention for Jan to build her own if need be. Montgomery" is an acoustic tribute to Robert Johnson, while the title track, "Limousine Blues" simmers in a much darker vein ala SRV. "I Got A Feelin'" shows the lighter side, while "Rise Above" brings blues blues blues in a classic slow thriller.

Tina Turner, Janis Joplin, The Rolling Stones'-Jan James' performances have always provoked these comparisons. With her sandpapered voice and tough-blossom ethos, Jan has clasped the enthusiasm and acclaim of US and European audiences to her blues-rocking heart.

b. 22 August 1967, Portland, Michigan, USA. Singing in church and listening to blues and rock on record, by her teenage years James had become a confident and accomplished performer. While at Michigan State University she met guitarist Craig Calvert and they began to play and compose together. Their band, the Flying Tigers, built a solid following in and around Detroit and soon they were eager to expand their base. Moving to Chicago, Illinois, and with a new band named Jewel Fetish, James and Calvert played in many locally noted blues clubs, including Buddy Guy’s, Blues Legends, Taste Of Chicago and The House of Blues. As James’ prestige grew she began performing under her own name, with Calvert continuing to provide powerful and fiery support for her singing. James sings an engaging and exhilarating mixture of traditional country blues and classic rock, with strong undercurrents of gospel and even hints of country music.

In the mid-90s, James added to her dedicated local following through the release of an album on the Netherlands-based Provogue Records. Her European audience has continued to grow and although recorded in Chicago, her next few albums were also released by Provogue and received rave reviews in Europe and the UK as well as back home in the USA. In Chicago James appeared in a stage presentation of Love, Janis, based upon letters written by Janis Joplin, a singer to whom she has been favourably compared, and built around her life and music. The recorded work of James and Calvert shows them to be decidedly superior to many better-known artists. –--allmusic.com
