HANS THEESSINK (NL) (pronounced Tay-sink) took the road less travelled. A Dutch musician interpreting American roots music is not the easiest formula for success. But 15 records later and a virtually non-stop touring schedule suggests that HT took the right road.

Bo Diddley called him "One helluva guitarplayer". Presscritics, all over the world, have praised his concerts and albums and generally regard him as one of the leading white blues-singers/guitarists. Hans is also a prolific songwriter.

In the early sixties HT has his first meeting with "THE BLUES" - A radioshow, featuring Big Bill Broonzy and Leadbelly, leave a deep and lasting impression: Hans gets obsessed with the sounds and emotional richness of rural country-blues. Slowly he begins to master the bluesguitar (no books, no videos, no teachers). Hans has a deep respect for the old masters but - unlike many others - does not make the mistake to become a copyist: He's an exploratory improviser who likes to blend musical ideas, often coupled with contemporary songs that reflect on the world today.

By the mid sixties Theessink started playing live in front of an audience. His first recording was the EP "Next Morning at Sunrise" in 1970 - several of his earlier recordings have collectors value now. Over the years Hans has built up a strong following; His music has continually developed and he has attained a status which is unique for a European. His musical abilities, stage-presence and entertainer-qualities have also earned him lots of recognition in the country where it all comes from: invitations to play at prestigious North-American festivals like the "New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival" or the "Chicago Blues Festival" speak for themselves. Even a die-hard Big Bill Broonzy fan such as Theessink realizes the blues can't stay stagnant. That understanding helps makes his reverent combination of Delta blues, New Orleans R&B, and especially gospel so riveting. The Dutch guitarist/vocalist, besides being a talented singer and musician, is an accomplished songwriter. He uses the elements of his eclectic influences to create blues based tunes that pay tribute to their American roots without being hamstrung by them. He shifts from the J.J. Cale swamp shuffle of the title track and "Rolling Stone" (not the Muddy Waters tune) to the rousing deep Mississippi acoustic blues of "Train" and the folksy closing ballad "Man with a Broken Heart." Theessink's burnished, mellifluous vocals wrap around the material like a smoky haze, further reinforcing his obvious connection to blues and gospel. Vienna based, Theessink took his show, or at least his tapes, on the road to L.A., Dublin, and Austin, recruiting musicians from those cities to overdub parts on songs he had already laid down basic tracks for. Despite its somewhat Frankenstein-styled genesis, the results are warm and inviting, creating music that seems as if guests such as Marcia Ball, Cindy Cashdollar, and Terry Evans were recording simultaneously with him instead of after the fact. Tuba from Jon Sass creates unique basslines as well as reinforces the music's New Orleans connection. Songs such as the singalong "Home Cooking" overflow with churchy joy and choruses, begging to be belted out in a live setting. You can practically feel the mosquitoes biting on "Lazy, Long Hot Summer's Day," a languid trip through the heat of a typical summer day in the deep South featuring a short but head-turning tuba solo from Sass. These 13 originals boast distinctive melodies that can be traced back to Theessink's love of American blues but aren't bound by them. Although Hans Theessink has made a name for himself with his acoustic blues guitar proficiency, he's the closest thing to Ry Cooder other than Cooder himself. On his last outing on Blue Groove, Theessink collaborated with long time Cooder vocalist Terry Evans for 2012's Delta Time, a soulful, gospel drenched electric blues excursion. This time out its all Theesink, acoustic and more folky, but with plenty of soul.

Theessink is most Cooderish on“Take Your Picture,” a low key, tongue in cheek romp that epitomizes Cooder's innate playfulness, with Theessink scat singing Betty Boop style, then dropping into a Clarence Frogman Henry croak for some basso, burping scat underlined by some smooth fingerpicking. Ironically, in the liner notes Theessink says that although he made the song up during a live show a while back, he can't help but think that he'd heard it somewhere else.Yep- its an amalgamation of Cooder-isims. But that's OK. Wherever he channeled it from, it's helping to keep that Cooder spirit alive.

But Theesink is not a Cooder clone. For Townes Zan Zandt's “Snowin' On Raton,” he's very Leonard Cohen-ish, rumbling along quietly in low gear but still pulling plenty of weight along with him.

He tries on some other personas, cloaking himself in Brownie McGhee's skin for “Living With the Blues.” Theesink's version is softer, vocally and instrumentally, than McGhee's choppy, chugging original,but his is just as intense, just at a lower volume.

Theessink's take on Bob Dylan's “Ballad of Hollis Brown” is just as creepy and sinister as the original, with Dave Perlman's pedal steel guitar snippets snaking around his feet as Theessink mumbles the lyrics as so as not to get them riled up enough to strike.

The title cut is Theessink's, but it sounds like Eric Bibb vocally and instrumentally.The guitarist gets a chiming tone playing the mando-guitar, which once again leads back to Cooder, who favored the instrument on tunes like “Jesus On the Mainline.”

Although Hans Theessink can be very much his own man, on this outing, he's deep in Cooder's shadow. Done this well, there's certainly nothing wrong with that. Keep it coming. ---Grant Britt, nodepression.com

He plays a variety of string instruments (primarily guitar) along with harmonica and jew's harp and often performs in a duo with tuba player Jon Sass. Call Me is a fine effort from Thessink.
