Born in Angola in 1957, Nuno Mindelis was building and playing guitars by the time he was nine years old. Nuno's family lost everything in the Angolan Civil War, and he was forced to flee his home at age 17. After a year of separation, he was reunited with his family in Brazil and continued to pursue his music.

Nuno's early work, including the albums Blues & Derivados, and Long Distance Blues, received very positive reviews in Brazilian National media. "Guitar Player Magazine" profiled Nuno in an issue, with editor Jas Obrecht comparing Nuno to Jimmy Page ("think Jimmy Page 'I Can't Quit You Baby'"). Further recognition came in the 30th Anniversary Guitar Player Magazine Competition, where Nuno was named "Best Blues Guitarist". Nuno subsequently recorded "Texas Bound", featuring Tommy Shannon & Chris Layton, Stevie Ray Vaughan's famed rhythm section, "Double Trouble." "Texas Bound" came to be the top seller in Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg) and brought worldwide recognition.

Nuno followed with another album featuring Double Trouble, entitled "Blues on the Outside." After his first appearance at the Montreal International Jazz Festival in 2001, Nuno was named by critics as the "best blues guitar" player of the Festival that year.

After the release of his album "Twelve Hours," which featured more original Blues tunes, Nuno released an album, "Outros Nunos", specially dedicated to Brazil. All the songs were recorded entirely in Portuguese and treated listeners to a fusion of other musical elements, including rap, hip hop and samba). The album received laudatory reviews and was considered one of the year's best albums in Brazil. In 2010, Nuno released "Free Blues.' Carol Borrington of Blues Matters Magazine-UK wrote: "In this CD you will find some of the best blues guitaring around". --- shiningstonerecords.com

The Brazilian blues guitarist, Nuno Mindelis, lists Johnny Winter as one of his guitar idol and main influence. I suppose then it should come as no surprise that this CD features Winter's former bassist Tommy Shannon as well as Shannon's partner in Stevie Ray's Double Trouble, drummer Chris Layton. While you don't hear a lot of Winter's influence on the disc, the presence of SRV is certainly heard throughout. This is especially true on the traditional "Egyptian Priestess" and "Blues For Antones". Elsewhere, to solidify that Texas sound, Mindelis invites Lou Ann Barton ("Texas Bound") and Steve James ("They Call Me The Beast") to the party. Mindelis also cover's Jimi Hendrix's "Castles Made Of Sand" which, while rather short at 2:49, is right on the money. The guitar playing on this disc is excellent and Mindelis' vocals are an added bonus. --- deepbluereview, amazon.com

The CD is Nuno at his fiery best. From Nuno’s own ‘Hugs’ (covered worldwide), to the instrumental version of Hendrix’s ‘Castles Made of Sand,’ to other Blues classics, you will soon hear why this CD is the one that people have spent years searching for. ---cdbaby.com

This is the Nuno Mindelis project I have been waiting for. This is a radical departure from the wonderful 12 Hours CD. All the songs are in Portuguese this time, and the styles wander from track to track. Not to worry, there are blues influences to be found -- and much more. Nuno's playing is tasteful throughout, whatever the genre, and the lyrics of the self-penned songs are pure Nuno. Tenho Medo is funny and clever, the acoustic Sao Paulo is simply gorgeous. On the track Siglas (Acronyms) Nuno sounds like he's doing Polish Hip Hop. Check out the lyrics. Chove Chuva? Be there.

Even if you don't know a word of Portuguese, if you love Nuno, you will want this CD. Every track will be a surprise for you, and as others have noted, Nuno Mindelis knows how to put together a coherent whole. My only regret is that before you know it the CD is over, and you are wanting more. If you've never heard Nuno, you can't go wrong with this CD. --- Jim Quist, amazon.com

Free Blues, by internationally acclaimed Blues guitarist Nuno Mindelis, celebrates a Blues Phoenix arising from the ashes. Blues music has undergone rediscovery and rebirth as it is passed from generation to generation. Eric Clapton and others helped deliver Blues reborn in the 1960's and 1970's. The Blues deserve more than a rote replay in exactly the same way as we have heard it for over 40 years. There is more to Blues than merely Blues Rock.

To honor those who have kept the Blues alive, Nuno first looked back to twelve themes which touched him deeply in his early teenage years. Tributes to the icons of the Blues, like Steve Cropper ("Get Stax, Jax"), are served, with tasty versions of the Blues classics ("Dust My Broom," "The Thrill is Gone," and many others, ending with a blistering rendition of Hendrix' "Red House"). Some tracks, like George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," and "Feelin' Alright" by Dave Mason, are not part of the traditional Blues canon, but are critical to the development of the Blues nonetheless. Nuno follows these early mentors, who injected electricity and rock into the origianal rural blues form. They triggered an explosion of innovation and revolution in the language of the Blues, making it accessible to new generations. Indeed, without this innovation, the Blues might now be found only in a museum.

Free Blues continues the rebirth of the Blues, but now infusing the contemporary musical language instead of the Rock themes of the 60's.

The true art is maintaining the traditional format of guitar and vocals as the foundation upon which Free Blues is crafted. Nuno creates a stunning and energized journey through the Blues that will both please Blues traditionalists and introduce this vital music to a new generation, just as the rock artists did decades ago. Make no mistake - Free Blues is not electronica, hip hop, or some watered down Blues-tinged bouillabaisse - it is the real Blues. ---cdbaby.com
